Shimla, Himāchal Pradesh, India himachalhotels... papers were signed to end British rule, and split India and Pakistan. As we left we saw something even more jarring on a building that looked like it should be in Scotland - a monkey walking across the ramparts of the lodge.

On the subject of monkeys., Shimla has a lot of monkeys, a lot of very confident monkeys. Its main temple is dedicated to the monkey god, so they have the run of the place. We hired sticks to ward off monkeys - they can ...
Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, India williment... and it's nice to sit here at the balcony in the sun, so why bother - that's what I was thinking, and thinking. And the drums went on and on. So probably after 30 minutes of having hesitation I decided to walk out and see what's going on there. Clear enought the moment I went out of the hotel the drum sounds started to become less and less distinct. I almost run trying not to miss the action. Eventually I reach the end of a procession that marches outside ...

Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, India denzilandthedoc... through 2 high passes and ends up in Manali, but at this time of the year it is not open, so I had to turn back. So I stopped in Tabo, also a small village, but there are no spectacular view from there. The attraction here is the monastery. I stayed at the monastery's guesthouse. It is 1000 old and the paintings inside are in bad shape but amazing! The walls are covered all the way up to the ceiling. It reminded me of Dunhuang in China (where ...
Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, India jennysabbatique... to side so much you don't get stiff. Shimla doesn't allow taxis through the centre, so you have to either carry your own bags into town or pay a 'porter' who is also a tout and local scoundrel to carry them for you. So we, of course, carried our own. And it's a bit hilly. And a bit spread out. But I think that I did admirably all the way to the nearest coffee shop where I collapsed and made Hugh go fight off the touts and find us somewhere to stay. Shimla high street (actually ...
Shimla, India hobnob... tourists during this season) at the top of a hill, which came out to be fantastic workout. We spent the rest of the evening getting dinner and wandering around town. The next day, we took a bus tour of the surrounding area. These are just "mid-level" mountains, but they really are spectacular. Along the tour, we stopped off to watch a cricket match and play in a cherry orchard.
Shimla, India tgreenspan... married;) So, Brigitte, thanks again for travelling with you, and although we both have our specific ' instruction manual' i wouldn't have liked to miss this time with you, in the end it was all good mate :) Am wishing you all the best for the rest of your trip, and who knows, we might still bump into each other over here or in Shimla! And here we are, in Vashisht, near Manali. This is another beautiful place in the mountains, at the beginning of the himalaya. Mc ...
Manali, India vincent.gerven... there, I couldn't get off, unlike what the guide book had stated, and even from the upper deck, trees and artificial mounds of landscaped garden obscured the view to get any worthwhile photos.) The other activity, indeed the main mission, was to get new specs made, as I ran out of time whilst in Bangkok to do this. I could get replacement lenses for my own specs within the ...
Chandigargh, India directgb... quickly clicked some photographs and recorded some movies along the drive. At around 1 pm, Dharmvir pull over at a road-side Dhaba. He seemed a regular there. After years of driving the valleys, he was well-acquainted with most of the dhaba owners. We had a peaceful daal-roti there. Trilok found some "cute-looking" puppies to play with (I don't know whether dogs really look cute, I know they bite). After about 45 mins of lunch break, we continued on our journey ...
