For the past few weeks we have been enjoying several German Christmas traditions -- including visiting numerous Christmas Markets, St Nicolas day (6 Dec) and even had our First Snow day just a few days before Christmas.

Of course - being away from home, we miss our own traditions and this year we embarked in attempting to make tamales at home. They came out great !!!

Mainz



Another re-built city on the Rhine, Mainz is most famous as the home of Johannes Gutenberg, inventor of the movable-type printing press in 1456. We started our brief time here with a visit to the Gutenberg Museum. We watched a demonstration of the printing process on a replica of the early hand press. ... middle of it, and it looks really cool! after that we did some more sightseeing around Frankfurt - a chinese garden, a massive statue called 'the hammering man' (a figure of a man that has a moving arm that slowly hammers) and things like that. then in the evening we went to another Christmas market! but then we slowly made our way home- it was so cold and a really tiring day!

... I knew that I was stranger in an other country. But only a few days later I stopped wondering and stopped noticing all the differences because this was my new home for the next ten weeks. ... half price...we will make budget today. Back in the room we take long hot showers without having to push a spring loaded button and get truly clean and groomed for the first time in several days. We will see the castles tomorrow and use our eurail passes to ride the boats on the Rhine.
