The city called Heraklion, or if you like, Iraklio. Two names for the same place. It's the big island. Once treed and lush, it was clear cut for timber to build ships. The Minoans ruled the seas. It was the whole world then. 5,000 years ago. Give or take a thousand. Imagine deforesting an entire island the size of Crete. We do it every year in BC. Haven't learned much have we? Lisa and i have hit the seawall early. Walking along, we stop to ...

Back to Greece again. Heraklion, capital of Crete, second biggest island in the eastern Med. We are amazed at the size - 650,000 resident population. Switch from Turkish Lira, back to Euro's again. But it was totally worth it. The panoramic views we had the entire way ...

Weather: glorious. Slip, slop, slap.
6.30am arrived at the Island of Crete where we disembarked at Ag. Nikolaos (means Saint Nicholas) where Olive Oil products are paramount. The Cretan diet is known as one of the healthiest diets in the world (1/3 largest).
We did a tour of the Palace of Knossos where the Monoan Civilization thrived in the Bronze age (roughly 3,000 BC) within the Aegean. The palace was ...

... an understatement (my shoes started feeling sticky on the blacktop) - lol. All was well thou as we had water and sunscreen. It was probably a couple of kilometers but we made it just fine. Our whole tour group of 15 finished off our day at another family run restaurant down a little narrow side street. It was beautiful - we went in but I guess we were still outside because the roof was actually just tree cover. There were small planted teracotta pots covering ...
