    ... all walked around Basel. Not much going on in Basel without taking the tram, but it was a beautiful day for walking around with our newfound friends. We will do the touring on the tram tomorrow and go into town with our guide. We walked to the end of our pier and took a photo of the monument where the borders of three countries meet.     ... packed with healthy looking sunbathers (not the place to display our glowing stomachs). Nevertheless, it was lovely to be back by the sea again as we planned the next couple of days ahead. Day one, we discovered that 3/4 of the main walking path linking the Cinque Terre villages was closed. Our 8 mile hike turned into about a 1.5 mile hike and we still had to pay the full fee to walk the small section of the path. However, the walk from Monterosso to Vernazza was ...

    ... and the mountains each side are gigantic ....there is one waterfall that is massive and three other small ones ...walk for a few hours and then back for shopping to have a light dinner in my room ...feast really and I can climb out my window and sit on the roof and take in the view ...rooms not that bad then. Dinner and knock off a bottle of red and watch homeland that I'm now addicted to. Go to sleep with the windows open to the sound of the waterfalls around me ...not bad at all ...

    ... the atmosphere around ...reasonable eye candy ...so it's not too hard to take. Back home at Birgits around 6 and it's possibly the hottest time of day ...dinner is just a quinoa salad ...so fresh and easy and chill out on the couch and watch a movie ...too hot to explore the world of Basel. Birgits apartment is delightful and her dogs are wonderful..love them ...so good to have dog companionship ... Miss Mr ...

    ... tonight I went ahead and bought some of the fabulous pretzels we saw yesterday to share with our group. I also found a grill where they were selling all sorts of wurst so we tried a bratwurst which is served on a plate with a slice of marvelous bread and a dollop of mustard. We called it an appetizer before heading back to the ship for lunch.

    The afternoon was free time with shuttle buses available to return you to the city (15 minute ride) ...
