Reisevorbereitungen

Now you see it.. now you don't

We were planning to go to Liechtenstein but thought we may as well as it was sort of on our way. It's the worlds 6 smallest country so it would have been rude not to go..haha.

We didn't drive to the main town but to another.. where really there wasn't anything. I did get a photo with the tourist sign though. Had to somehow prove I'd been there!

And CHEESE!!

After a week in Basel we jumped on the train to visit my Uncle and Aunt (Heinz and Elsa) in Gossau – a small town in the north east of Switzerland. On the way we spent a few hours in Zurich where we just wandered around the city centre, had lunch and sat by the lake. Heinz and Elsa met us at the train station and walked us back to their place – about 2 minutes away! They took us for a drive up to a place which gives a great view over St Gallen ...

Across the border

Our third stop of the day was our first in Austria. Now I was entering undiscovered lands! Feldkirch is right on the Switzerland border. The old town centre is surrounded by towers, and a castle sits on a hill above.

We explored Feldkirch and a few of its towers. The old town is quite charming with its colorful buildings, trickling fountains, and small shops. When we tried to ...

... weren't too interested so they took Lincoln (who couldn't go with us) and we went to have a look. It was a rewarding visit. It is amazing to think how long ago some of those books and transcripts were written, and how well cared for they must be to remain in excellent condition. The library itself is breathtaking, with leather bound books lining the shelves, large windows (no doubt filtered), elaborate woodwork and staircases, and a muraled ceiling ...

Quck jaunt to Liechtenstein

... building, and the government building. This area looks very modern but blends well into the surrounding mountains and old houses and buildings.

It was a sunny day but a bit chilly. I decided the best way to warm up was to hike up to the castle. I started walking up a steep hill that I thought would lead me to the castle. It passed through a beautiful residential area and eventually ended at a trail head. Perfect! From there I ...

Switzerland at Last!

It is unfortunate that we arrived in Switzerland so late because everything was so dark! We meandered up narrow roads in search of the town of Appenzell. We finally found it and collapsed in bed after a wonderful cup of tea and yummy pastries. In the morning, we awoke to the mountainous splendor of Switzerland. Everything is so green and pristine! The street sweepers are out in the morning keeping ...

Zurich the City

... a very unusual place. It was a sausage bar. All stainless steel and modern fixtures, they paid for the expensive fitout by charging $5 per sausage, beef, veal or pork and throwing in a piece of delicious bread. Mustard was another 70c. you eat standing up, and can buy beer or wine to chase it down. I really enjoyed it, but it was a very long way from the Bretts Hardware sausage sizzle on Saturday mornings. I wonder how it would fare as a business in Australia?
