In the heart of the red light district

Hello everyone!! Thanks for the two parents and Aaron who have commented on our blog as we do like hearing from home (one week down ... eight to go!) We are now in Amsterdam and man is it hectic!!! there is cars trams bikes and motorbikes coming left right and centre and that doesnt even include the people everywhere!! you have to have eyes in the back of your head to walk around safely!!! We were navigating our way to our hotel (The heart of Amsterdam) which is right smack bang in the middle...

Two days in Amsterdam

We left Glasgow and slept the entire flight to Amsterdam. I was amazed at the number of canals, dikes and water everywhere. Farmers fields don't need fences for the sheep because there are water filled canals around the fields. We are staying at the "HEART OF AMSTERDAM HOTEL" which we booked online. It turned out to be in the middle of the red light district which turns out to be a very popular and somewhat benign visitors district. Lots of marijuana "coffee houses" and mellow tourists. Not m...

Trip to Amsterdam

So, we decided to take a short trip to Amsterdam and found some cheap tickets online. We stayed at The Heart of Amsterdam Hostel & Hotel, it was alright but much more like a hotel than hostel, no kitchen or living room. We went to the Van Gogh Museum and we did the Heineken Experience, both were amazing. Amsterdam is a beautiful city, it is built on wooden stilts and has managed to stay afloat this long. Full of bikes and an incredibly hard to navigate tram system, the city has a mind of ...

MOI! Kompastun kalkkiviivalle lyhentaessani kolme viimeista paivaa yhdelle sivulle. Amsterdami oli kulttuurin puolesta jotain ihan muuta. Punaisten lyhtyjen alue tuli kaveltya moneen kertaan lapi ja muutamassa coffeeshopissakin piti ihan kulttuurin vuoksi piipahtaa. Yhtena paivana paasimme aikaisin ylos, joten kokeilimme hyvaksi todettua "free tour" kierrosta. Opas oli jalleen eloisa ja kertoi seka Amsterdamin historiasta etta nykypaivasta. Han kertoi miten bordellisysteemi toimii ja mista se...

Last Stop: Amsterdam

Moi!

Ridiculous!

The transit set up in Amsterdam threw me off at first. Sharing my path with cars and gigantic electric trams was frightening at first, but I eased up to it after a while: it was, at least, very space-efficient. The canals are beautiful, the coffeehouses well stocked, and I honestly envision myself living here.

Wow

Hey!
Amsterdam is alot busier and much more interesting than I thought. It is certainly the city of the night. My hostel is smack bang in the red light district, I am right next to a hard core porno live porno show and some smoking cafes a couple of stores down. I could stay up all night just walking these few streets, so interesting. My eyes are wide open. And yes there are hookers on display everywhere, All day, everyday, sometimes they have windows down narrow alleways or on the main st...

Thank God we only stayed here for 3 nights. Not cheap considering what a dive this hotel was. Several days later my husband has come out in spots we think from the wildlife in the beds. The rooms were not clean although we did get clean towels every day. I am no prude but it was in the middle of the red light district with lots of shady characters hanging about outside at all hours.

Hotel Scabies

from A TripAdvisor Member
The hotel in itself was ok as long as you weren't in the room with the window adjacent to the neon sign at the front, like my friend was.

We booked 3 rooms with 2 persons in each, so far 1 person from each of the rooms has come out in scabies which has been diagnosed by a doctor.

The only thing linking the 3 of us is that we all used the hotel towels obviousley they do not clean their linen enough. The room itself was clean but what difference does that make when you come out in a measle type rash because some little mite has burrowed itself into your skin!!!

Stay away and they may do something about the problem.

Be careful!

Beware if you plan to spend a few days in that hotel as we did. We stayed for a week and for a little more money you can find a better hotel. Bed sheets were never changed in a whole week. Sometimes they just used to arrange the sheets, but most of the times they didn't. Sometimes they didn't even take the used towel, they just put fresh towels. On a certain day they didn't have any fresh towels available. The worst thing however is that the mattresses and sheets some of which are stained with paint etc, had several small white flea like insects and other insects. Some of us in our group got a skin infection from the bed sheets and had their entire body covered in red spots and during the night they used to feel mosquito bites, which in fact weren't the mosquitoes, but where the bed sheets themselves or the fleas or bugs on them. The room was never cleaned and was quite dusty. Any garbage was hardly ever thrown away.

Staff is very friendly and helpful but not worthed to stay in this hotel unless it's just for a night or in an emergency case.

Not For The Faint Of Heart

Heart of Amsterdam was one of the best budget hotels I stayed in Europe. Make sure to fuss and get a private room instead of the orphanage-like basement - it's well worth the money. Rooms are clean and hospitable, with lots of light and a TV. Bathrooms are ensuite with a shower stall; everything is extremely clean and well-working. The complimentary breakfast is great for cheap travelers - every morning I ate my fill AND made a sandwich for later. The staff are friendly and willing to help with directions. Only downside is its location right in the Red Light District; this is not a hotel for families. Situated on the same block as a live sex show, the Hemp Museum and Cannabis College - the perfect college hotel!

If the Red Light District is your thing...

I stayed at the Heart of Amsterdam Hotel with some friends last summer. I must say, if you are into the Red Light District and all of its "attractions" then this is the place to be. It is located at one end of the RLD, so you can walk down to the other end, cross the canal, and walk back to your hotel. The rooms are very basic and a little on the small side. When we stayed, it was a bit pricey, perhaps due to the time of year we went, but like I said, you are definitely paying for the location. I would stay here again if I was with my friends, but would prefer a nicer part of town if staying alone or with a girlfriend/wife.

Stay away

This place is a dump, no lockers, smells, sheets are not changed. You dont get what you book. Pictures are misleading - trust me DO NOT STAY HERE

A bit ropey but ok for the price

from A TripAdvisor Member
Stayed here about 2 years ago. It's functional. We got it fairly cheap (about 30 euro's a night each) and right in the centre. However, the last time we visited for the same price I managed to get a private apartment on 3 floors/3 bathrooms/dishwasher etc etc right in the centre!! Now that was a bargain :)

So basically, this place is ok. Probably better in larger groups as you'll feel safer, but there is definately better to be found with a little searching and patience...

This is the place to be!

If I had the chance I would live at this place. It is right near the red light district but I loved it for a different reason than you might expect. In Amsterdam pretty much every thing closes by or at 1:00am expect for the red light district so if you are going to want to be out later than that you probably will not want to walk far to your hotel. One of the only bars open to 3:00am is the second door down and is a very fun place to be. This might not be the most extravagant place to stay but if you are wanting to have a good time I highly recommend it. I would like to say that Amsterdam is awesome and that there is no other place in the world where do and see every thing you can here. You will have the time of your life no matter what.

Shady. Really shady.

I'm a 20 year old female, and was travelling alone through Europe. I arrive in Amsterdam and get a cab. I gave the driver the address to this hotel. His response: "Uh, you look like a nice girl. Are you sure you want to go here?" Having done previous research and finding no other vacancies, I didn't have much of a choice. First of all, it isn't on the 'outskirts' of the Red Light District, (as advertised) but RIGHT in the middle of it. The legendary phallic statue is 2 doors down from it. That means, LOTS of scary people around. Secondly, the locks on the doors were flimsy at best, and most of the lights didn't work. It didn't seem like the type of hotel where guests normally stayed the whole night...stay away.

Stay away from this 'hotel'

from A TripAdvisor Member
Found this 'hotel' on the internet and it sounded like a dream. Until we showed up and saw the place. First off they only had a room with a bathroom availiable for one night, even though our reservation had stated otherwise. Then when we saw the room we were even more dissapointed. There are many other places to stay that are far superior to here that are the same price. DONT STAY HERE.
