I'll take the high road - the Grossglocknerstrasse

Friday, we left Lake Bled in Slovenia and rejoined the motorway on which we had arrived to go northwards. After stopping at the services to purchase the required vignette we entered Austria via the impressive Karawanken tunnel. At 7864m long it is one of the longest we have used this trip. We were soon driving through typical alpine scenery with the hillsides dotted with chalet buildings bedecked with floral balconies, which were set amidst lush green ...

... path - across the path at waist height. Kind of like aerials I suppose. There were people on the other side, and they were quite flexible so it seemed like we were just meant to walk through them, which we did. However, as we learned as pushed through them, they're electrified. And did I mention they were waist height? Yeahhh. We shortly got back to the chairlift, just in time to watch a paraglider take off by jumping off the hill, and we undertook an ...

So far we'd been really fortunate with the weather. The forecast had indicated showers turning ...

... and sweat until we finally arrived at the Aperativo place that Jess had been trying to go to. But it was closed on Mondays, after all that. I guess it wasn't meant to be! I suggested we go back to the place we'd just booked for dinner, Jess agreed but we were now quite close to the Doge's Place Museum. We waited in the queue to get to the ticket office for a while, then found out that you can't buy a ticket to just this one museum - you have to buy a pass for all four museums - add ...

Where Eagles Dare

... get to the Eagles Nest 70 years ago. Our first stop were the bunkers that lied hundreds of feet into the mountain. I wish I could have taken pictures (not allowed to) but wow, the bunkers were massive. It took some serious manpower to create this underground city. The walls of the tunnels are close to 5 feet thick and there are over 17 km of underground bunkers. Surprisingly, the bunkers were only used once. The next stop was the Eagle's Nest or ...
