So I arrived Friday night at aprox 11pm. Good thing two because my plane waited on the tarmack for 45 minutes after we boarded for some reason and I only had an hour lay over, needless to say my entire plane was running through mallorca airport trying to get their connection. I made it just in time though. Berlin Air is really nice, they give you free candies when you get on and then free drinks and snacks on the short flight and then a salami or cheese sandwich on the longer flight. I ...
Copenhagen, Zealand, Denmark sarahmarieIt certainly doesn’t take long to get behind on these things when you are visiting so many amazing people and places, and then working a million hours a day. I still need to write something quick about our visit with Nils, Nadine and Leila in Skanderborg. I just need to write about how amazing and intelligent (and fun) these people are. We had dinner at their house and spent the evening playing musical instruments, buying ice cream from an ...
Copenhagen, Zealand, Denmark maia... taken straight to a potluck with Josh’s classmates. Josh is doing this amazing Masters Program in Sustainability and has the most interesting, international group of people in his cohort. It was so great to get to chat with them and do some dancing, eating and drinking. The program sounds incredible and it led me to do some research into Master’s programs in Sweden. The culture of sustainability ...
Lund, Skåne, Sweden maiaBornholm contrasted sharply with Copenhagen: where Copenhagen was bustling with public transportation and bikers rigorously community to work Bornholm was characterized by small towns, leisurely bikers, and beautiful round churches. We took an overnight ferry to Bornholm to spend two days biking on the Danish island of Bornholm and through the weekend biked over 65 miles. On our second day we happened to get caught in the rain and waited for it to pass in ...
Bornholm, Denmark annalise.m... shavings on top. Then we walked down a wooden trail (that reminded me of the musical Mama Mia) to the beach. Dueodde marks the most southern tip of Bornholm and has some of the finest sand in the world. In fact, Dueodde sand is exported to be used in hour glasses!
I loved the feeling of the sand beneath my toes and enjoyed the scenery even more - it was a long white sandy beach with the green foamy water of the Baltic Sea. We filled water bottles up with sand to bring ...
... a swarm of them devouring apples that had piled on the path. There were some scary moments but they were interested in the apples, not us and we did not get stung. Blackberry bushes laden with fruit were everywhere and we enjoyed snacking on them as we traipsed along. One could see why Bornholm is the tourist destination that it is for Swedes and other Scandinavians. What a wonderful place to enjoy summer!
Bornholm, Denmark lacasarodante... strawberries and white wine frozen to a slush, then a splash of champagne added just before serving. Tomorrow is Copenhagen, Denmark, so we are
not missing Denmark entirely. We traveled on to Copenhagen and instead of docking tomorrow morning, we arrived at 8 PM and were allowed to leave the ship if we wanted to. Our dinner went from 7:30 to 10 PM, so we didn't leave the ship.
Luckily for me, everyone else biked way too hard the day before and/or also got sick. Therefore I had plenty of other people to be lame with and take the bus. We went to the biggest tourist site on the island, way out on the northern tip. Hammershus is the largest fortress/castle ruin in Northern Europe. It ...
Hammershus, Denmark sarahindenmark... us was one of the exchange students from China. Danes also say exactly what is on their mind and this old man told her that she could be Chinese. Her eyes weren't slanty enough. She must be Korean. I've also heard stories of many Danes meeting a skinny American and acting astonished that they are not fat, as all Americans are fat. It seems that they expect other societies to be as alike among one another as they are.
Osterlars, Denmark sarahindenmark... thing I've been on. We got clean fluffy bedding and our own toilet and shower...definitely not something that happens at hostels...or did happen. In fact, our hostel was more like camping. It was located in the town of Gudhjem, a small seaside village like most villages in Bornholm. This particular city is bit less of a fishing port and more based on tourism. Our hostel was directly in front of the ocean, with tiny rooms and some ...
