Well, we had a surprise yesterday when our home-stay hosts suggested we stay in Speyer an extra day. It seems the anticipated guests for the next weeks home-stay have faded away. That saved us an overnight in Frankfurt. So today we flew entirely without a flight-plan. We got up, had some coffee and toast and decided we should confirm train times to the Frankfurt Flughafen. We will have to be on a train out of Speyer no later than 12:00 noon. ...

Weather glorious again so took the funicular up to Mercury's Vista. Quite a ride and the view was spectacular. We could see about 15 villages in the valley below from the Mercury Tower. There were also huge samples of the variety of rocks found at Baden Baden, and they dated from 142 million to 750 million years old. After our return trip on the funicular we caught a little open tourist train and learnt some more ...

One of the big attractions in Baden Baden is the Caracalla thermal baths. There is another older spa that is swimsuit optional, but James and I chose the "swimsuit required for most of it". It's the one- called the Caracalla spa. It's like a water park for adults.

We checked in, got our electronic ...

Amazing are the restorative powers of a big clean hotel room, a cold shower and good wifi. Our hot and and tiring journey to the town of Germersheim that in all it's different phases seemed several days long rather than one, now became an adventure to be celebrated, as we waited for our dinner under a big patio umbrella of the hotel's Italian restaurant. Another cycling couple around our age had checked ...

    The Not-so-fine Rhine

... certainly been good all the way. Just as we approached the border with Germany, a ferry presented itself and we decided to hop on board, thinking we might avoid some of the industry ahead. The Rhine ferries that go from one side to the other are small car ferries, about the size of the Brentwood Bay - Mill Bay ferry. The fare was about 6E for us and the bikes.

The trip took less than 15 minutes and the captains of ...
