Boquete to Costa Rica

... more drink!" so we headed to the after hours bar called "Jose's". It was technically mom's last night in Boquete so we had to go out with a b ang, it's only natural!

Friday was low-key. We spent the majority of the morning cleaning the house (Jill and Terry were coming home that afternoon) and moving our stuff to Refugio. We met Rebecca after her classes, had a snack and she decided that she needed to go back to the doctor; her wonky sickness just wouldn't leave ...

Volcano Town

... The worst I had seen since we lived in Dallas. The thunder was very loud and the rain was very hard.

Once my call was over, we went to dinner. We went to a place called Lava Rocks. It was a local Soda. Most everyone had pasta I think. When dinner was over, they asked us if we wanted some pie. They said there specialty was apple pie. Well, we decided to try the apple pie with ice cream. It was apple pie with ice cream, but the apple pie ...

How Many Thongs are Too Many?

... the southernmost of the three routes that lead to San Jose. We entered some really steep roads as they crossed the mountains. The bikes were working hard in first and second gear as we negotiated the switchback turns. We dipped down to the bottom a a small drainage and in the bottom I noticed a squealing sound. I thought it finally happened, my bike had a problem. I tried to get the noise isolated by listening to each side of the bike and trying to see ...

Costa Rica

... and had amazing views over the cloud forest and out towards the pacific ocean some 60 miles away. The ziplines themselves were up to 900 meteres long and some 200 meters above the canopy. The scariest ride however was the tarzan swing a 10 meter vertically free fall before swinging out into the canopy. Many guys that morning I´m sure will no longer be having children due to the pain experienced at the end of ...

... adventure with The Desafio Adventure company. We had an exhilarating four hours in the midst of thick rainforest with so many waterfalls we lost count (and were gutted not to have our waterproof camera to capture it all). It was a mix of abseiling, repelling down incredible drops, the most dramatic being the 210ft waterfall, and trekking. The scenery was breathtaking when you were able to take a break from ...

The Arenal Volcano

We arrived here to be bombarded by people trying to get us to stay at their hostels or hotels. We went to the Hotel Las Palmas which was quite nice and was only US$20 a night. Once again, the rain has followed us here and it looks as though it will be following us throughout Costa Rica. I must say that regardless of the weather, Costa Rica is an amazing country! While it may be a bit expensive in comparison to the other countries we have visited ...

Frogs for Africa

Santa Elena There are two towns that service the famous Costa Rican mountain cloud forest reserve of Monteverde. We stayed at Santa Elena. Costa Rica owes an enormous debt to quakers who fled the perceived militarism of the United States in the 1950s to settle in Costa Rica, which had recently abolished its armed forces. The quakers protected the Monteverde area. This seems to have been an important first step in Costa Rica developing its comparatively outstanding ...

Getting to know our inner Tarzans!

... the end of one line to be hurriedly fasten onto a rappelling line where the guides let you hurtle toward earth before giving you a gigantic wedgy! So for the first split second you are feeling a mixture of terror and bravery (looking as you do like a SAS soldier jumping out of a helicopter) as you plummet earthwards - in the next moment you are grunting in pain (at least the guys were) as you stop very suddenly - much like a friend playing a cruel trick on you at rock ...

Day 15 - Drive to Alajuela

... we returned the car 5 hours late. We spent the rest of the evening in the bar hanging out with other travelers who had just arrived in Costa Rica and giving them suggestions on where to go and what to see. I forgot to mention that on the way to Orquideas we stopped at the Mega Super in Alajuela and bought 10 pounds of coffee and 10 large bottles of salsa chillero (we are able to buy Lizano where we live in San Francisco). The coffee in the supermarket is ½ what they charge in the tourist areas.

Discovering La Fortuna and Arenal!

... Costa Rica, Rio Frio, Canastos Volcano and Cerro de los Guatusos. Arenal is the youngest and most active of all the mountains in Costa Rica. Scientists have been able to date it back to more than 4000 years ago." Wikipedia We opted for a 3:30 walking tour close to the Volcan which included a visit to Baldi Springs. The selling point of the tour was to see the lava at night but unfortunately we did not see any spectacular views....... But the ...
