... a University town, and when we get to the top of the town we stop at a university cafe in a shiny marble nineteenth century building. Then we explore the streets squares and piazza, which are full of people and busyness. We find a vegetarian cafe, and Helen is in heaven, and enjoy a glass of wine and some healthy, tasty food. Beetroot in Italian, I discover is literally called "red turnip". It works for me. We wind our way out of the town, and down to the station ...

A typical Italian breakfast, where fortunately we have arrive early enough for the precooked omelettes to be warm, includes packets of cereal, cakes, cheese and ham. We are offered seconds of expresso and cappuccino. The proprietor fusses over us as we leave. This would be a terrific hotel for a group of cyclists. We ride down the driveway and the imposing front gates into the narrow winding lanes of the town, ...

Jackets are on for the descent because there is a chill in the air and we bomb down with the enormous cliffs of Vettore looming up into the clouds on our left. We continue through dense forest, most of the time in shade on a winding undulating quiet road, ...

... We have checked out the beach and its very nice and tomorrow we shall go and check out some of these wee towns scattered around this district. 9th September 2015 Got up a bit later and after breakfast we went riding to Portonovo, a small settlement on the beach. It was 30km of steep hills and amazing scenery. We had a coffee stop and a sausage roll and cream bun before tackling the 5km climb out of Portonovo. I don't think I would have got up the hill otherwise. This coast is ...

As we were coming to the end of our stay in Macerata, we took some snaps of the lovely aparthotel where we stayed. We'd also seen some Roman ruins on our travels so went back to visit them and discovered an amphitheatre used as a venue for concerts ...
