A bit cloudy today as we depart for the "Alpine Jewels" optional tour with a local guide, after a 30 minute drive we arrive at a cable car at Vogel ski resort and go to the top of the mountain for a view over the lake. Later we stopped by Lake Bohinj to see St John's Church a 13th century church adorned with frescoes although we didn't go inside. Paid 41 euros for this excursion and were back at the hotel in 3 hours, not ...

It's a nice warm day today as we leave Vienna for Lake Bled in Slovenia. We meet our Tour Director Tadeusz Suski and we have 51 people on tour, mostly Aussies but about 8 from South Africa, some from the US, Canada, Phillipines, India and 1 from New Zealand.

... the Irish woman and her partner Yolanda and we ended up at one of the terraces of the hotels, sitting having Bled cake(cake with a layer of custard, cream in the middle and a layer of pastry on the top) and coffees in the evening sunshine. It was so nice. We all left at about 6.30pm and I headed to Gostilna Planincu for dinner. This is a great restaurant/cafe, really cosy, with great food but I must warn you, the portions are big!

... through the forest covered national parks of the southern limestone Alps. There was a light drizzle falling and a covering of mist gave the scene a magical atmosphere, it was stunning and eerie at the same time. I was literally open mouthed as the train passed over scenic hills only to then sweep down into deep valleys below. If the train journeys of Norway were a fantastic experience then this was equally so. If I had a video camera I would have had it glued to the panorama ...
