Admittedly we didn't originally plan to venture into the relatively unknown town of Alor Star (or Alor Setar), but our time on Langkawi was cut short due to the lack of budget options and fully booked accommodation. As it turned out it was to be expected, since it was Hajj, the most important Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia.

We struck up a conversation with a squiffy elderly man slurping on his 5th Guinness, who kindly advised us of what to eat.
