Departure from Agra - Onto Fatehpur Sikri

Just an hour outside Agra is Fatehpur Sikri, once the Mughal capital. It was a walled city that has some imposing red sandstone buildings and was the home of the emperor Akbar and his thousands of wives. We chose a hotel that would do for the night, but it had some issues. The main one was the single ceiling fan that would attempt to cool us with evening temperatures ranging between 28 - 32 degrees (high 80's - low 90's). But we decided to go on and stay at this hotel and hope that the evenin...

Deserted City

Spent an hour or so wondering round a big deserted city.

Built on a misguided whim by a rich Mohgul king with one Cristian, one Muslim and one Hindu wife.

Abandoned a few years later when they ran out of water and decided to go off and conquer somewhere else.

What is left is a huge palace/fort/city with the only remaining bit in use the tomb/temple ...

The kids are experiencing so many different facets of life and the train was no exception. We had reserved coach class seats in aircon and the smell of chemical disinfectant wasn’t the best companion for the three hour journey to Agra. Issy had sparked up in the morning and was very brave making the journey after the previous day in bed. However after two hours she frantically nudged me awake from my dettol induced sleep, explaining that she had forgotten her condition ...

We make it inside to this dark cool interior again with magnificent decoration, carvings filled with different semi precious stones and a spectacular tomb of the king and his Queen(who it's named after). We weren't allowed take any photos inside but i've got them all in my memory!! Again we were an attraction, I must have had about 20 photographs taken ...

... are likely to travel to European countires or Pacific islands such as Hawaii, Guam, or Saipan. So they looked a little bit weird and interesting to me.

We got off the bus in front of the entrance of the Palace. Around the entrance, there were some remains from the past, so I expected ruins even in the Palace. Unfortunately, the palace was beautifully restored and not authentically beautiful with the original form. Some tourists may enjoy the restored ...

It was so hot.

I can't even begin to explain how stuffy it was. We had a room that had a fan, but the power went out every few hours for 30min at a time. Those 30 min.......there are no words. BUCKETS and BUCKETS of sweat would be POURING out of us. You could actually see the sweat glands forming and releasing the sweat, sending rivers running down us. I don't even think this really describes just how hot it was. We starting wetting ...

... that if he wanted 30 INR, then he would have to take us to where he promised. He finally agreed and then took us to the East Gate. So we got out and paid the man.

We walked around in one of the two possible directions, which brought us to another disgusting slum, and we turned around rather quickly to head the other direction which seemed much more promising. We knew that the hotel was supposed to be around 650 meters from the gate, and we ...

Agra Belly

If you come to India you must go to Agra is what every guide book, tourist, traveler and Indian will tell you, the home of the Taj Mahal, is an unmissable wonder of the world. Everybody knows Agra itself, is busy and ugly and it is best to arrive, visit the Taj and leave, that was our plan too. But after arriving late on Thursday afternoon we decided to stay the night and ...

We walked this snake like path with our now 3rd guide who didn't speak any english. He talked a lot though so I imagined the place we were going was pretty interesting. I walked last and lit up a cigarette, a couple of children suddenly appeared out of nowhere also smoking. It sucks because I can't actually say ...

Side trip from Agra

There is another UNESCO sight within reach so we decide to see it. Fathepur Sikri is an elaborate sight built by Mughal Emperor Akbar between 1571 and 1584. It was his main palace and actually was the capital of his empire for a period of time. According to our guide, he lived with three wives, all of different religious background. Hindu, Christian and Muslim, his favorite was the Hindu ...
