... After visiting Rothenburg, the group took a 1.5 hour bus drive to the hotel. After less than an hour of relaxation, it was dinner time (although we hit the bier garten beforehand) and we had some nice polka music to listen to and pork and sauerkrat for dinner. Afterwards, we enjoyed the evening a bit more before turning in to get ready for heading to Munich in the morning!

    Bayreuth to Lichtenfels (0 + 12km light) - Day 24

There was a thunderstorm overnight and the morning was cloudy, cooler but humid. Today was 'moving day' and out train was not until 12:30 so we checked out of the hotel just before 11am and took the long route to the station. Using one of his troops that spoke fluent German, they marched to one of the city gates and informed that Nazi officer in charge that he had three hours to decide whether to surrender peacefully or be bombed to kingdom come. Ignoring Hitler’s order to defend Rothenburg at all costs, he surrendered to America troops and the remainder ...

Dresden to Bayreuth by train (2km) - Day 22

... and bought frikadellen and some salad stuff and put together a large salad (with a local beer) which were ate in the room. When we went to bed just before 10pm it became obvious that our room was going to be noisy - immediately above a quite busy road intersection with orange street lights. We got out the eye masks and earplugs and went off to sleep quickly (at least the quilts were lightweight ones so we could sleep with the provided bed linen).
