I write from the shore of the magnificent Lake Bled. I have had such a beautiful day - the picture you can see first off is the view I'm currently seeing, absolutely stunning. ... and just 6 miles or so from Italy, we stopped at a great stone fort that was used by the Italians in the 15th century to fight the Ottoman invasion, and then ironically by the Austrians to repel the Italians in the 1st World War. Sheer drop on one side, sheer cliff on the other with ladder rungs affixed to the cliff face (see photo) that allowed soldiers to quickly get to the mountain top, a very dramatic site, full of history. ... home we took a detour to a small rural hotel in the outskirts of Ljubljana to have dinner prepared by the owner/chef, Martin, who our friends had befriended on a previous occasion.
