Smaltzy, but I loved it. 50 years ago, in 1965, the movie was made here in Salzburg (and indoor scenes inside in a Hollywood studio). We went to all the sites of major parts of the film, saw many familiar buildings and recognizable sites, and learned about fact and fiction regarding the Von Trapps. Our guide was an Austrian from Salzburg, who had lived in Boston for 10 years some years ...

... the Residence in the morning, then met up with Anna and the Chatswood group at the Birthplace and went through that together.

The group then had free time until 5.30 so we took Anna with us and had some lunch together. She was very bubbly and full of news and happy to spend some time with the old folks. We needed some breakfast supplies so visited a supermarket and a fruit stall and took the food back to ...

... constantly impressed at its efficiency and the fact that it is on time and frequent.
The journey itself was magical. As we travelled towards Austria the countryside changed from Italian villas and vineyards to Austrian architecture and mountains. They sure do know how to build roads here - no twists and turns round mountains, just drill a hole through it or put a viaduct in. The train ride was so smooth and quiet and the scenery was stunning both ...
