... more time in the mountains and less time
in Munich as he drifted into his fantasy world. Ludwig II increasingly identified himself with Parzival, a legendary medieval figure who became the Grail King through his purity and faith.

Ludwig was so intrigued that he asked Wagner to write an opera about it, which he did in 1877. Wagner and his circle privately even referred to Ludwig as "Parsifal", and his problems were incorporated into the drama of the Grail. ...

... as the rain started pouring down. Nothing like storm chasing on foot although I think we were the ones being chased. I spent the next while sitting on a nice covered balcony drinking a cold Erdinger beer taking pictures of the storm. The castle receives 1.3 million visitors a year and in peak summer days, over 6000 visitors, and were they all here today or what? The walk up the steep climb took around 20 minutes, and in the midday sun and 33 degrees, some of us were a bit grumpy, not to mention ...

... reason it is worth paying for a tour at all. Inside the castle is dark and uninspiring, full of religious imagery on the walls and slightly mad in places. Well, it has an unnecessary grotto/cave that only he,ps explain why the guy who built it, King Ludwig, ended up receiving the latter day equivalent of being sectioned in his bedroom there. The tour is a very quick half an hour in broken English and tells you nothing ...
