    ... day walking with a picnic up in the mountains. Our legs hadn't quite recovered from yesterday's hike - but once we had warmed up, from the climb straight up from the car park, we were fine. Thankfully we didn't loose the path too much this time - so managed to get the whole walk done in the daylight !! :) - yet another day of amazing views - fab ...

    ... our walk to be quite so long. We unfortunately started to loose daylight at about 5pm and chose to head back into the valley on a different route, down a rather steep track, which took us a good few miles out of our way, but at least we were on a known and made road.     ... this, but once I noticed the cars were slowing down and being respectful of me I calmed down.
    Bolzano marked the forty kilometre point of the journey and navigating through it slowed me down due to its considerable size. I stayed on the cycling routes and a followed the vehicle signs for Trento as I knew it was the next major city on the way. This is unfortunately when the biggest problem of the day came along. As a result of the remoteness of the outposts, supplies were few and far between for the soldiers, and during the winter they had to make do with what they had for weeks at a time. The war in the Dolomites lasted for four years, and took many lives, more often through hunger and cold than enemy fire.
