Oaxaca - pronounced wa ha ca

... sat on chairs listening, behind them there are banners of Marx, Engels, Lenin and Stalin, I wonder if they purposefully left off Trotsky. There's a real political mix here, stalinism, indigenism, trotskism, environmentalism, new, old, no one really knows which direction to go in, what will offer most hope. All the while around the main square people are selling their wares to the tourists.

... and soaking up the atmosphere. During one meal i was eating outside when a group of 15 girls started waving and smiling at me. They then came over and asked if they could have their photo taken with me. I was a little bemused but said yes and they were delighted. I couldnt understand why they would want a photo with me. A few mins later i saw a group of women dressed in traditional dress so i asked to have my photo taken with them ...

Election Night in Oaxaca

November 4 When some folks here broached the idea of watching the election returns together, Neal arranged with the Institute to set things in motion. We finally assembled a group of 20; some were PLU students and a couple of faculty spending the semester in Oaxaca and a token Canadian! We walked over to a restaurant near ICO, celebrating an incredible evening of watching CNBC/CNN and applauding an Obama win. We appreciate ...

Tomorrow Monica is going to be in Oaxaca as well, and Pete should be here in the next few days too so it will be fun to celebrate Mexican Independance Day with some friends. Thats all for now friends, tomorrow in the zocalo is supposed to be a crazy market. I´ll let you know how that goes. I´m also going to try and book more nights at this hostel if it´s possible. I get a double bed here!!

Random Night in Mexico

... fried bananas, and zucchini. I normally don't like zucchini but she made it in a way that I really like! The weirdest part was how they eat their corn though, the put mayonnaise all over it, then sprinkle cheese and "tonys" on it and then put lime all over it. It was very different but also very good! I'm not a huge mayonnaise fan so I didn't put much but it was great. It once again has been raining all day. I asked my teacher since it has been raining so ...

... a sweet little side trip up to Merida to the visit the consulate. We expect the paperwork to take a few days, which will afford us the chance to see Chichen itza, which was originally on our plans. Hopefully, to we can get to Tulum and perhaps Cancun or Playa del Carmen for some snorkeling while they process the new passport. We have built in extra days for just such occassions, so it´s no biggity. In an effort to keep the peace I have chosen to refrain from ...

No English spoken by the teacher at all....by us either for that matter. The random English words we spit out he responds to with the appropriate Spanish one. By the end of my four hour class, my head feels like it´s about to explode. Total emersion. It´s good ...

... stores.

I just love wondering around and talking to folks about what they are selling. ¨What is that used for? Did you make it? What town are you from?¨ All you have to do is start off with, ¨Estoy solo mirando¨ -- I´m only looking-- and then you´re free to chat away.

After exploring the market, I headed up to the cathedral where people were filing in for mass. I went in, too, mainly because they were handing out branches at the door, and I ...
