Time Back in History - Lost in Kyoto

Early morning depart from Osaka -> Kyoto Interesting Japanese breakfast "shao yu". It was a shining day with crystal blue sky, our first task was to find a breakfast place and depart for the best city in Japan - Kyoto. Our plan in finding a breakfast place in Dontombori failed because that area was really for dinner and night life, not for early breakfast. Luckily, an elder guy who got up early pointed us to a breakfast place, a real Japanese breakfast place! It turned out a wonderful expe...

Walk in Shogan History - Unveil Kyoto

We had traditional Japanese food again in the morning, hummmm, couldn't have enough. Today's schedule was really packed, Nanzan-ji, Ginkakuji, Path of Philosophy, Nijojo Castle, Imperial Palace...all in one day. There were just so many temples and shrines in Kyoto (estimate: at least 1000 of them), a month might not be enough even visiting 3-4 temples/day. Nanzan-ji is really so serene and quiet: you wanted to forget about the troublesome of the world and the messy thinking of the human world...

Memorai of a Giesha - Kyoto

Remember in the scene of "Memorie of a Giesha", Ziyi Zhang ran down a narrow lane in a temple with thousands of red orange pillars? That's the first destination of our schedule today. A side story happened was the Japanese driver who drove us to the Inari temple offered to wait for us outside the temple for 1 hour, and took us to another temple. In order to avoid misunderstanding, we told him to leave and drive wherever he wanted and came back in 1 hour if he happened to drop another customer...

Bright Lights, Small Cities

... been able to actually visit a few of these places. They offer something the bigger cities don't. And that's, well, I guess... Awesome?

But first up is Osaka. Its not really a 'small town', In fact, it's the second largest city in Japan. If Tokyo is all bright lights, and Kyoto is all about sophistication, Osaka is about nightlife. Loud, Merry nightlife. Osaka is a Japanese Vegas. Yet it lacks the tackiness associated with Vegas and instead teams up with all things Asian ...

Kickin' It in Kyoto

... country wide for its volcanic hot springs - some of which for bathing, whilst others still, though too hot for human flesh, are beautiful spectacles. Sulfuric steam seems to spout from every which drain, gutter and pipe available to it, rising above the houses built upon houses, adding a fantastic atmosphere about the quaint, crowded little town. Our first stop was the affectionately named 'Monkey Mountain Park', home to some 1,200 wild snow monkeys which roam about ...

... the neatest feature of the whole building. The giant planks had nails places under them in such a way that the floors squeak when someone walks on them. Dubbed nightingale floors, these floors were supposed to make the Shogun's residence "ninja proof." Some of the rooms, had small manacans to show how the shogun would set up court. It must have truly been a spectacle. Leaving the main building we were greeted by the intense sun and after a bite of walk came across a beautiful ...

There are loads of cats with waving arms and I want to get one just because they are so tacky, but the DH puts his foot down. Inside the temply, you could forget that you are in the middle of a city, as you stroll around neatly clipped hedges, carefully balanced fountains and raked-to-perfection gravel.
Outside, we found a shopping mall and went ...
