Market City at 4000m

After a very cold (but surprisingly comfortable, in terms of seats) night on the bus which careered to La Paz in record time (terror), our first view of La Paz as we drove in was something else. The views of the city with the surrounding mountains was amazing, spectacular & very impressive. We checked into our hostel to find we were on the 4th floor, hard work at this altitude with our backpacks on, but the views made up for all that - something we didn't expect from a budget hostel! Refr...

Bitterballs, Sate & downhill madness in Bolivia

On Thursday fortunately my stomach had stopped being a nuisance and we could move on from Copacabana to La Paz. It was a pretty uneventful bus ride, apart from a short ferry journey over Lake Titicaca, where our bus (and luggage) was shipped on an interesting ship.

We had no idea what to expect from La Paz, so we were pretty relaxed about getting ourselves organised with trips and stuff, and we decided to take a chilled-out approach and not plan anything. However, we were pleasantly s...

La Paz

The 14 hour bus ride from Sucre to La Paz was probably the coldest in my life ever.. We went for the highest class (cama) and were told that there would be heat and even a bathroom on the bus and no people standing in the aisle. So far so good. There was heat untril about 10pm or so but after that it went freezing cold and even the super thick wool blankets we had were not enough to keep us warm and we were glad to have our sleeping bag liners and llama socks.. We were sitting a row away from...

Too good to be true

Joel: Well, after 6 days recovering and the swelling on her face much reduced we thought that Rose was basically all but recovered. It had been a very stressful and tiring 6 days, having to go back every day to get the wounds cleaned and dressed, not least the massive worry I had for Rose´s wellbeing when it first happened. However, upon being able to open her mouth for the first time in days Rose discovered that a section of her jawbone was exposed (note that she discovered this and not the ...

The patient patient

Rose:
I am a free woman.....I was discharged at 11.30am - not a moment too soon after one week´s admission in the Clinica del Sur, La Paz. Forgive the repetition but the patient needs to speak. I am so happy to be given my "get out of jail fee card". Like Joel said the physical care was really good but I was climbing the walls with the lack of social /chatty contact. I was lucky though to get several calls from friends and relatives and a couple of visits - apart from Joel´s faithful dail...

Uyuni > La Paz

Diwrnod 28 - Iau 18/09/08 Milltiroedd Tir a Deithwyd ~ Land Miles Travelled (Uyuni i La Paz) : 350 miles The best night sleep I've had on an overnight bus journey so far- all of 2 hours. The bus was an hour late getting into La Paz due to that one of the rear brakes had to be changed somewhere between Uyuni and Oruro. So we arrived at the fringes of La Paz just as it was getting light and my first impression was that it was very hilly (La Paz is the highest capital city in the world at 3640mt...

The bus journey to La Paz was quite an experience, with no paved raods until we´d been on it for 6 hours! But I managed to get some sleep, and by the time we got into La Paz, I was feeling ok. I was also pretty excited to see some greenery, which meant that my horrifically dry skin might actually get a chance to recover! The desert is not good for skin used to English winters!
La Paz is a mental place, so much going on! We read and had heard of a lot of bad stuff happening to tourists her...

2 Weeks in the captial

... in La Paz at 7AM.

Going to be here for couple weeks. Staying at large hostel in a very historic and extremely detailed building.

So far we have been to couple museos, witches market several times, and explored the downtown on walkabout daily. Very interesting city, and we were able to easily find Indian food for the first time since ARGIE. After pretty repetitive menu options for past month or so, it was food sent from the gods! We gorged like proper Americans.

La Paz not as expected

... at 3,600m altitude. We could feel this by simply walking around the place. We explored some of its museums (up a steep gradient that reminded us of its altitude and the forthcoming Inca trail) and churches. Since I was last here 10 years ago, there have been some changes to the main Plaza de San Francisco - which I am sure had a large statue, now gone.

Angela and I drank and danced the night away in Mongo´s, one of La Paz´s trendier nightspots ...
