... the countryside for part of Saturday to avoid the crowds. We had a trip out to the fishing seaside town of Volendam and then took a ferry across to the village of Marken. With breakfast eaten I decided to take the bike up to the station area of the city and park it up there and go explore.

After an adventurous train ride (malfunctions, 4 transfers, no English, friendly travellers who were all in the same boat) we finally made it to Amsterdam Centraal, one of the most beautiful trains stations we have seen so far. We met our hosts at the apartment after a short and (thankfully) uneventful tram ride. They welcomed us with vases of fresh flowers, a bowl of fresh fruit, and cold beer and prosecco in the fridge! ...
... too. Apparently this is commonplace when the sun comes out - which happens a couple of times a year. After that we just wound our way back home over several hours cruising round the canals & their bars. Very pleasant and especially good doing it on bikes. Got home, had some leftovers for dinner and watched the Black Caps scrape a final over victory against England them lights ...
