Auckland

Great to be in Aoteroa: land of the long white cloud. We are ready to settle here and soak up the city. Having never lived in a city centre it was time to enjoy the novelty and convenience (although we didn't consider the noise pollution!). NZ has a great affiliation to the UK and it's so easy to feel at home. We heard more northern England accents here than anywhere and took comfort from this, being so far from home and all! The city of sails: Auckland. Our home for 4 months. An easily navig...

North Island Emirates; by far the best airline I have flown. Luxurious deep fill seats with fantastic legroom, a choice of hundreds of movies on your own personal entertainment station, and great food and wine with real stainless steel cutlery. And this was standard Economy Class! Believe the hype. Landing in Auckland was a shock to the system, it was chilly compared to my last 10 months! Fleeces on, Ebony and I headed for the Central Business District (CBD) where we'd booked a hotel for the ...

Waiheke Island

Our first week in New Zealand was spent in a pretty gnarly budget hotel just off Queen Street, the main street in Auckland and the heart of the shopping district. This was our base for about 10 days while we found somewhere to live, for Naomi to organise her fast approaching work placement, opening bank accounts, to orientate ourselves and generally just to start getting ourselves into the mind set of residing here on a permanent basis - well 6-8 months anyway. As I sit here now, writing this...

Americas Cup Yacht

Yesterday was Mum's birthday so we met up with Mum and Peter (they arrived sunday afternoon) and took a trip on the Americas Cup Yacht. The wind was up to 30 notts(?) which apparently is quite strong and is why the boat seemed to be about to fall over the whole time! After getting over my initial fears about falling in I managed to get the chance to 'take the helm' aka 'steer' which was awesome!! It really turns so easily you could spin on a sixpence if you wanted. The weather was perfect and...

Auckland, adieu

... for us here, because, lack of job-hunting success aside, I do quite like Auckland, in particular the plentitude of parks and green spaces and suchlike - just today I discovered the tranquil charms of Albert Park, a calm oasis right in the center of the city. In general, development is quite low density here, with a population similar to Dublin spread out over an area bigger than London, but the resultant pleasantly low-key vibe is also the city's Achilles' heel as the spread-out ...

New Zealand Part 1

... previously thought so we were pretty sure greg is a relative and by rights owns half the brewey (or a least a few free beers). We spent St Paddys after the tour drinking more Montieths and sitting in the sun chatting until the wee hours. Next day we headed to Hamner springs, which are natural springs with various minerals such as sulpher which are meant to be good for the health to sit in. Excited about the health kick we headed down early evening for a dip. We lasted ...

NZ-The final part of our NZ adventure

... of a bar stool! We weren't completely lazy in Taupo though, we did manage to do a 10k walk out to Huka Falls, which are amazingly powerful, and back. We also took a trip out to a volcanic museum and information centre and also to Aratiatia Rapids. These were considered a stunning part of the local area, so when the government decided to put a Dam in front of them, therefore ending the flow of water which made them so stunning, there was uproar. So, as a clever compromise, it was agreed ...

Kayaking Cathedral Cove

... Then I had a cheeseburger at the internet cafe I had been at this morning. Then I was back on the road headed for Auckland. I wanted to get through the mountains before dark. The sun was just setting as I came through the last of the mountain passes and crossed the one lane bridge leading from the Coromandel Penninsula back towards the highway. I made it back to Aukland at about 9:30 pm and hit the sack. Tomorrow I have a lot of driving to do.

Dimecres XXVIII - I - MMIX ...

Arrived in Auckland, NZ

I arrived in Auckland tonight and was met by Matt and Rachel, two of my friends from my exchange in Portugal. We spent hours catching up, which made for a late night. I spent about a week in Auckland, mostly with Matt. We went to an extinct volcano, downtown and the likes. It felt good to just kick back with an old friend ...
