Great to be in Aoteroa: land of the long white cloud. We are ready to settle here and soak up the city. Having never lived in a city centre it was time to enjoy the novelty and convenience (although we didn't consider the noise pollution!). NZ has a great affiliation to the UK and it's so easy to feel at home. We heard more northern England accents here than anywhere and took comfort from this, being so far from home and all! The city of sails: Auckland. Our home for 4 months. An easily navig...
Auckland, New Zealand carlosb1978North Island Emirates; by far the best airline I have flown. Luxurious deep fill seats with fantastic legroom, a choice of hundreds of movies on your own personal entertainment station, and great food and wine with real stainless steel cutlery. And this was standard Economy Class! Believe the hype. Landing in Auckland was a shock to the system, it was chilly compared to my last 10 months! Fleeces on, Ebony and I headed for the Central Business District (CBD) where we'd booked a hotel for the ...
Auckland, North Island, New Zealand chrissmith300Our first week in New Zealand was spent in a pretty gnarly budget hotel just off Queen Street, the main street in Auckland and the heart of the shopping district. This was our base for about 10 days while we found somewhere to live, for Naomi to organise her fast approaching work placement, opening bank accounts, to orientate ourselves and generally just to start getting ourselves into the mind set of residing here on a permanent basis - well 6-8 months anyway. As I sit here now, writing this...
Auckland, North Island, New Zealand ditchYesterday was Mum's birthday so we met up with Mum and Peter (they arrived sunday afternoon) and took a trip on the Americas Cup Yacht. The wind was up to 30 notts(?) which apparently is quite strong and is why the boat seemed to be about to fall over the whole time! After getting over my initial fears about falling in I managed to get the chance to 'take the helm' aka 'steer' which was awesome!! It really turns so easily you could spin on a sixpence if you wanted. The weather was perfect and...

... in the UNICEF bag that went through the cabin and the lady came back and gave hime a bottle of Champagne to say thank you. Think I'll try that next time, it looked like a decent bottle of plonk. Landed safely in Auckland through a thick layer of cloud.
Glad we were wearing full UK isssue of socks and shoes, trousers and thick hooded jumpers when we got out of the airport as it was fresh in comparison. Oh we got through the airport customs and all with no bother what so ever ...
Auckland, North Island, New Zealand gaz-lj... live there. Whatever, it's their choice and I have accepted that. I made sure that night I was in a cleaner room, that ended up being all to myself.

The next day I made the ferry crossing to Picton. It usually takes 3 hours, but because of delays, it took 4.5 hours. No matter, I was stoked when I saw snow covered peaks of south island get closer and closer. The Marlborough Sounds were amazing too, with leaves turning orange and red for the ...
Auckland, North Island, New Zealand tstilesSince the last entry, in Hawke's Bay, Tom and I have zig zagged around the North Island, picking up a Sloth in Auckland and are now in Northland enjoying a few days with Tom's brother before heading back to James, Vanessa and Moby in Melbourne. From Hawkes Bay we went up the east coast and popped in the sea at Mahia - a lovely beach, and then on to a rock slide somewhere inland from there - that was a slightly scary experience with many bumps on the way down into ...
Auckland, North Island, New Zealand mobymojo... to make progress at times because of all the photo opportunities along the way. The Germans seem on to it, they're here in their droves and all for good reasons. NZ - It's fantastic, It'll grow on you. So there it is everyone, thats how to ride a bike from one side of the world to the other. I hope you enjoyed reading my blog / dairy entries. Maybe one day I'll turn them into a book (in which case I'll let you all know so that my sales will at least get into double digits). I'm ...
Warkworth, North Island, New Zealand goldenbez... full of the most beautiful Victorian houses and lovely beaches. There are two high points on the island and we walked up both of them - on the first there was a rock concert happening and families with kids and teenagers all having a great time and on the second there was one paraglider sailing around like the birdman and another one who couldn't get off the ground. A good place to sit and rest. I thought Sydney had a lot of inlets, bays and ...
Auckland, North Island, New Zealand maxnstan... is a law called ACC. This small law protects everyone, doesn't matter who, in the case of any accident. So if you don't plan on hurting yourself, the government will pay for all medical bills for that health coverage. Now, this has several influences on the social environment. First, people generally think there are invincible (and in a country where there are no poisonous snakes, spiders, or scorpions they may be right ...
