Prisoners families were allowed to send in packages, and he would order that everything in these packages be dumped into the pots and that is what was served for dinner. This included things like toothpaste, medicines, books, and so on. After the hustle and bustle of a series of cities, plus the confrontational nature of Nazi/ Hitler/Holocaust etc, it was so nice to escape to a small town on the Elbe River. Having said that, I must admit I was impressed with the way Germany does not dilute or avoid mentioning the horrors of the past. There is no elephant in the corner of the room! I love Berlin!! One of my favourite places we have been to so far along with Barcelona. We did alot whilst we were there.
