... we saw Cremona on the map and it looked interesting, so off we went.
Now, there were basically 2 choices - the main Autoroute, or an interesting-looking "main" road, ( being a bold red road on the map), and because it looked as if it would traverse some nice country, I chose the latter...

... pines and mélèze, the heat and the scent from the pines reminded us of Lacanau. The road surface is excellent for most of the ascent, and there is a marked cycle lane on the right hand side of the road. It doesn't get much better than that!

From the elevation profile we were expecting a constant climb, but after a few kilometres the road levels and there is a slight descent before climbing again, offering some respite for the legs.

Briançon is the highest city in France, at 1,326 m. Our hotel, 'Le Temple' is ...

... A few cyclists passed us on the way to the top. It's a fairly constant 7% for the whole 12 km. At the top of every col so far there has been someone who has offered to take a photo for us, Col du Télégraphe was no exception.

We donned an extra layer and enjoyed a smooth ride down to Valloire, where we found a patisserie that would easily accommodate our bike without a lot of faffing around, and offered some outside tables in the sun.

... a right turn onto the D83 and a final 8 km ascent of the day to Aussois. I've come to the conclusion that ascents at the end of the day's riding are a really bad idea.

By this time the weather had turned showery, which meant trying to keep dry and cool at the same time while continuing uphill. I opted for cool, and didn't put my jacket on and so got a soaking and chilled again as we arrived into Aussois.
