... I knew with some decent navigation through the hills (GPS is gone and we are working off an old map) that we might intersect the cyclists. After winding mountains and wet roads we found ourselves twenty kilometres out of Geradmer in a town called La Besse. There were cars parked on the out skirting roads with people on the march wearing backpacks. We drove for another five minutes before our success was evident, we had driven right up to the course proper. We ...

My route took almost 9.5 hours to complete today. I'm not sure it was a particularly long distance, but it sure presented a number of challenges to me.

First, I had to climb out of the Valle de La Loue. This meant following a narrow, winding path through woodland that often had the look and feel of a tropicmoBoainforest. My clothing became quite saturated with moisture, some of which was the result of negotiating little waterfalls that ...

We had never heard of Besanšon until Donna and Werner mentioned it. It's the capital and principal city of the Franche-ComptÚ region in eastern France, near the border with Switzerland and is the capital of the dÚpartment of Doubs. We stayed there for 3 nights through a spell of bad weather from Friday, June 27 to Monday, June 30. This was our only multi-night stop since Meersburg at the beginning of our trip ...

... we would just see where the day took us. But on arrival and having done 55k and a hill up to the town in the warm weather, we were very much looking forward to stopping. In fact, I was feeling absolutely stonkered! Not to be!!! The only hotel in town (the other two had closed) was fully booked!

What a dilemma! What to do? Go back 10k to a hotel spotted earlier by the river where Keith had been keen to stop, or push on to Besancon where we had a room booked ...
