... we actually left Vilnius and visited the Republic of Užupis. This literally translates as the Republic on the other side of the river. This area was abandoned after the Second World War and were later occupied by the homeless and prostitutes leading it to become a rather dangerous area with one street being nicknamed 'Death Street'. The district eventually attracted Artists and bohemians and in 1997 the residents declared it a republic along with its own flag, ...

    Vilnius - Day 1

... s ok now. The Old Town is beautiful and I have so much to see and do.

The hotel is fancy and the service is so far impeccable. A bit too fancy for my needs on this kind of trip but I wanted to be central and in a reliable hotel in a city that I knew nothing about. My room is spacious and I finally get to sleep in a double bed after 10 days in a single one. I quickly settled in, got a map ...

AM - We decided as all old persons should, to go on a tourist bus ride around Vilnius. Actually Laimonas suggested it would be a good way to see more of Vilnius, so we went! Big black clouds were rolling in as we drove around the city, it did rain later in the day and the evening. But back to ...

We got into Vilnius and I walked about a mile to find my hostel. It’s not the greatest location, but it is a really nice hostel. It’s just been refurbished, so the inside of it is really nice, and it’s only a 10 minute walk to the old town, so it’s not that bad. As soon as I got to the hostel, the weather turned pretty bad so I just chilled at the hostel for a bit. It ...

It's been a while since my last blurb probably due to Michael's arrival in Vilnius the day after us. Quaint as Vilnius is, it's a far cry from Prague's majestic city. The old town is small and able to be covered within a day but we celebrated having the sun out finally after a soggy start and enjoyed sitting out in the square watching the parade of up market cars which seems to be their entertainment!! Going beyond the old town to view a few castle ruins ...
