... for Christmas and the atmosphere was very calm and peaceful, unlike the hurly burly in the summer months when it is full of day trippers.

The theatre has such a beautiful setting, but Etna was a little shaded by cloud although clearly visible to the naked eye, wit ha little smoke rising from it's peak. Unfortunately only the close up photos showed it off well. And we were lucky, it erupted a couple of days later!

We headed off by bus from Messina to Taormina where we could spend the entire day. Our group's guide was Christie, who has been doing this for 37 years! He was knowledgeable, welcoming and most charming. We walked the length of the main 'drag' of the town, then up to see the Greek theatre - what an amazing view! ... en dat is geen enkel probleem (bij het eten kopen we wel altijd een fles van de boot) Zij willen het ook wel proberen maar durven niet zo goed.
