In the 15th century, a rather typically cruel medieval ruler named Vlad became known as The Impaler, thanks to his preferred methods of executing his captive enemies. Nice. The train takes through pleasant rural scenery, with small villages, a valley with a string of wetlands, some quite large, and interconnected by narrow watercourses. Some seem to have a farm closely connected to the waterholes, maybe fishing lodges or fish farms. There are a lot of birds ...

... big, tacky Brasov sign (modeled after the big, tacky Hollywood sign). We wound up back at the Orthodox church, where we got to creep on a wedding and pet some stray dogs. We got another bus, with another driver, to take us to Sighisoara, where we were told that a bigger bus would await us. Our bus wasn't a bus so much as a large minivan, and I felt entirely too close to everyone else, all the way to Sighisoara.

... my book. made a seat reservation in
the wasteels office and old dear there declared my asking for my
reservation in romanian as "Bine!" Even better my
reservation appeared to be free - "gratis" she said (not
sure if that is actually the romanian word for free or whether she
was trying another language - italian -?)to which i replied "bine!"
as well and we had a little chuckle at our little conversation! was a
very convenient grocery shop ...
