... for tomorrow, and then we had a chance to grab some cevapcici and explore the market.

The market is quite remarkeable. Half of it is in the Turkish Quarter, with many goods being made in the shops by hand, narrow cobblestone roads, traditional Bosnian food and restaurants and very few blatent tourist shops. I only found one place that sold shot glasses in all of Sarajevo :S The market in the Austrian Quarter couldn't ...

Long day getting to Sarajevo

... beautiful with houses creeping up the hills but you can also envisage why it was so easy for snipers to hide in amongst the hills and attack unknowingly from above.

When we arrived at the bus station there wasn't really anywhere to go or anyone to ask for help about finding accommodation. As we walked towards where we thought the tram to get into the old town was, we stumbled across a post office. Sam finally got to post home some **** she'd been lugging around for ...

Train ride and we're in Sarajevo

... buildings alongside shells of former buildings and partially damaged (bullet-ridden) buildings. I don't think we expected the old buildings to be so developed. I'm not sure what I had in mind, but from my memory of news back in the day I guess I had pictured Bosnia as a ramshackle country lacking basic utilities. I guess this just shows my ignorance. The 5 hours of Bosnia we saw on the train today was nicer than upstate New York (sorry--closest reference ...

Cevapici time

... and getting pretty hot by the time we got into town, we walked around the old town and down to the outdoor market where we got ourselves some walnuts and fruit and then back along the river scoping out nice places to sit and drink beer but thinking at the same time it was a little too early. I kept looking at buildings covered with bullet holes and thinking, 'wow I have no idea about what went on here and not even any idea about the whole Yugoslavian story. This feels ...

Sarajevo

... UN controlled airport were used to get arms and food in and out. Guide had signed up to the Bosnian Army at 15 and a half years old and worked the tunnels quite a bit. They kept referring to the pride within the city of hosting the 1984 winter olympics and how in eight years it had become a living hell. The UN and global community don't come out of this one particularly well either.

Sarajevo, pretty scary start

... about Bosnia, then of course the famous Cevapcici and Burek. I forgot the places we went to next, but it was local adventure big time! Bosnia! In the end the guy brought me some DVD with Bosnian films, music and pictures. We said good bye and arranged to meet the following day. So i did. First we went to a cafe to have some traditional Bosnian coffee. Then we went to a friend of him who is a musician. He gave a demonstration of some traditional Bosnian music. After that he ...

Jasna of Sarajevo

... double room the next night. Finally we settled on a nice comfortable pension. For a person who had not studied up on her history or actually better termed current events. Who could not tell you the exact dates of the Bosnian conflict. I really had little interest to tour the city. Isn't it just another big city? But I started talking to our nice pension-owners about the war. It was the ubiquitous language of gesticulation as our hosts had poor ...
