... used my final day of my eurrail pass for this trip only to find that the trip from Visp station to the Zermatt was not valid despite being told by two train operators that it was. I also couldn't get through to the girl at the station that my eurrail pass allows me discounts for the train but she kept telling me, 'no, no, you can't use anymore days it's full'. Today wasn't the first time I have been stuffed around by the Swiss. It's hard to believe that Einstein was educated here.
... Even though the Italy tour hadn’t been as boozy as the first tour, it was still a busy time with a lot of early starts so we needed a bit of R&R.
We quickly discovered that Switzerland is very expensive! Most meals were about the equivalent of $40 Australian minimum! We found one restaurant that was a bit cheaper, but we left when I realized I was about to pay $34 Australian for a chicken salad!
So, we did what I never thought we would do ...
We woke "late" (8am) and were the last to leave our bunk. Skipping breakfast, we began our 5 hour journey back to Zermatt. We chose a route that would give us a different view of the valley, but involved 1800m of decent. We paid for it for the next few days. We arrived at our apartment and ...
Zermatt, Swiss Alps, Switzerland kramertown... on the snow with a lovely view from Mont Blanc on one side and the Italian plains on the other. In between there were dozens of skiers and snowboarders enjoying some summer runs. After our snow hike, we took a Tram down to do a 10K hike to Hornlihut, starting at 2500m. Tom was suitably freaked out by the ...
Zermatt, Swiss Alps, Switzerland kramertown... Gondola, we took a Tram to the top. Each stage of our journey had its own playground! The zipline at 2600 took the cake for the most over-the-top experience. Tom took Tyler home for his nap and returned 1/3rd of ...
Zermatt, Swiss Alps, Switzerland kramertown... better do some shopping today...let me just grab my bags and take the CABLE CAR down the hill. I'll have to transfer...then, when I finally get to the bottom, take the car I may or may not own...or walk a couple miles. Oh, yeah...and once arrived in "town," the grand selection includes a mom-and-pop general store, a very small grocery and a bakery. That's it. Major lifestyle adjustments: take ...
Gimmelwald, Swiss Alps, Switzerland spassvogel... cut through any mountains that might have been in our way. Like the mountains surrounding lake Geneva, these peaks rise right out from the lake. We didn't see any paddleboat place when we got off in Hilterfingen so we just walked down toward the water and set up our sheet on the grassy area that Allison was convinced belonged to some hotel or club. It probably did. Anyways, there was a nice dock, a raft and, Henry will love this, a meter diving board, a 3 meter platform and a 5 ...
Gimmelwald, Switzerland nglick... past the whirlpool below. Our muscular German leader gave us some very good, although vague, advice (see the title above). Aside from the height, we had to jump straight out, so as not to hit the walls on the way down, and far enough out to get over the current that was waiting to pull you back under the rocks. Daunting to say the least. After the first several guys made their jumps without any problems the ...
