    August 7, 2014 – Livorno

Today we opened our drapes to see a working shipping dock in the port city of Livorno. The cruise ships use it as the gateway for excursions to Florence, Tuscany, and Cinque Terre. Since we are coming back to Tuscany and Florence at the end of our cruise, we opted to just visit the port city. We disembarked at noon and found a shuttle bus waiting for cruise ship passengers. For five Euros they transported us ...

Mom wanted to see the birthplace of her mother but instead, we went to Lucca followed by the Tower of Pisa in the afternoon. We were split up into ...

... next sample was larger, and eventually samples became full glasses from what seemed an endless wine supply. This made for a fun and social afternoon! There was even a dessert wine which we were encouraged to dip hard biscuits into. Pretty tasty! We even got chatting to a nice American couple our age, Mike and Kelly. On departure, a few people even pocketed some wine bottles for the bus ride home. Alas, my afternoon took a turn for the worse for me ...

... a huge old church made from red brick by the looks of it and we found out later that it was the private chapel of the Medici family...what a shame we couldn't have a peep in side.

We all met back at the van and then we were off to our next stop. A gorgeous old church dating back to the 12th Century with stunning murals on the ceiling which was located in one of the back streets just a short walk from Piazza della Signoria ... I don't think we would have found this ...
