... to get a square inch to stand let alone lie in the sun. Luckily, Simone and Pierre and the family are away so they have generously said I that can use their pool while they are away. ... back to the railway station, but we’ve fallen for the place just the same. I think the key is the unassuming way the town just gets on with being, while people like us come and go. The little piazza below our window is the only square in the town so it’s not only the place where people meet, but also a favourite spot for kids to run and do the things kids do.

... using it as one of their hubs has helped to put it on the map, but even then, most people fly in, drive through the somewhat ordinary new town and continue on their way without seeing its main appeal. Bergamo has a lower new town, and the upper old town or Citta Alta situated up on a hill, surrounded by mountains. It's here that you find Bergamo's appeal and charm.
