... hour sponsored by our hotel, then returned to last night's restaurant to enjoy pasta and a "mixed salad." Everything here is local and fresher than fresh. Now that it was cool, we went down onto the beach, found a few stones by flashlight, and then I waded in to the water. Wonderful! We went back to our room and were sleepy fairly early, struggling to stay upright long enough to let dinner digest a bit. What a battle! As noted above, hardship ...

Today we went swimming at the beach in Monterosso. It is different from beaches in Australia because there are stones and rocks instead of sand. The stones all fill up in your bathers which is a little uncomfortable. Tonight we went on a boat ride along the coastline to look at the five towns of Cinque Terre. You may wonder why I was so bothered about a few people seeing me sleeping in a rowing boat. Well, here's the thing: if you've paid extortionate amounts of money to take your sweetheart on holiday in Italy and you're a straight-up, middle-aged, rule-abiding sort of person, you probably won't understand a guy who's none of the above trying to do ...

... every year for the past 16 years. A lazy rest of the afternoon, followed by a magnificent meal of Bass, rather like Trevalla, and grilled veggies. Neither the French nor the Italians are big into vegetables. The bad weather has really set in again tonight, although we are hoping the forecast for nicer weather tomorrow is accurate. Apparently there is snow at La Spezia, about ten minutes away by train. A ...
