Athens! It was a "must do". When we first started looking at possible itineraries, Athens needed to be a part of it, and we studied architecture and mythology to get ready for it. This was another port where we didn't like the tours offered, so we figured out what we wanted to do, learned from those who visited Athens before us, and struck out on our own. ... Mt. Lycabettus. I have so much respect for our professors kids (who range in age from 2-8/9) who climbed it because it was exhausting. It was mainly steps that you climb up. It was a beautiful view from the top, so the hike was so worth it. Corinne and I went out to pizza that day and the owner of the pizzeria asked where I was from because he said I looked Mediterranean, well that's a new one... Later on that night we went to Theatre of Epidaurus to see "The Trojan Women" ...
... flipper some more. Greece really isn't what I expected it to be. I either expected an old style big town or a New York City exploding place. It's neither really. It's in between. And the landscaping's also not what I expected. It's mountainous with lots of bushes. I'm not sure what I expected, but it wasn't this. ... outdoor restaurants, but on the opposite side are the ruins, with the occasional train full of graffiti. Graffiti is pretty rampant in Athens.
On the way back, we went thru some of the streets in the Plaka. Full of shops and pedestrian friendly streets. Lots of locals seem to shop here. Lots of stuff like sandals and fashion for young women. Some jewelry shops along the way.

... the thumbs up to show that they could hear everything. The coolest sound though was when she struck a match! After this we had free time at the ancient site here. The site wasn't actually a city but was a medical centre and obviously even these areas were big enough to have their own theatre as it was very important for the sick to heal their minds (through art and learning) as well as there bodies. Before we explored our guide explained to us how the symbol we use now for medicine ...
