San Juan del Sur

we woke the next day in Granada with plans to head to the Pacific. The destination of choice was San Juan del Sur, which is in the Southwest corner of the country. It is billed as a vacation destination for those that do make it to Nicaragua for vacation. We decided to hire a van to drive us to the coast. With 6 people, and the possibility of getting separated, it made sense to pool resources, sack up and hire a driver. It worked out pretty well, as the guys in the tourist office gave us a go...

San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua

Friday December 23rd, 2005 We left Tamarindo yesterday morning on a bus at 5:45 am bound for Liberia. It was a very long 2 hours let me tell you. I struggled to not be sick. The bus travelled to all the little towns along the way with unpaved roads that had been washed out by recent storms so if you could imagine a big greyhound style "floaty" bus avoiding all the potholes travelling 45 degrees to the right, 45 degrees to the left sometimes forward and very very very slow. Ingredients for car...

San Juan del Sur beach life!

Safi and I arrived in San Juan del Sur after the pretty good chicken bus ride via Rivas. We met a nice brother and sister couple on the bus and we checked into Hotel Estrella on the beach front with a great view from the balcony over the glistening waters and white sands. Surfing is the game here, but gonna give it a swerve as Im heading off to Costa Rica as I hear the surf there is top. I apologise for the really rapid last entries but I hope you all get the big picture and the funs are cont...

Rainy beach weekend

One of the rainiest weekends I have spend in Nicaragua. It would go to figure that is how our luck would go, it was sunny and hot all week long, and as soon as we get to the beach, bam! it rains almost the whole time. We made the best of it, Chloe, Loren, Emily, Sage and I had a fun girls weekend. We stayed at Hotel Estrella, beach front hotel. It was an amazing view of the little cove called, San Juan del Sur. We decided to make the best of the weekend by starting with some Flor de Caņa and ...

san juan del sur part 1

what up we be alive- we arrived in san juan at noon yesterday from the island. we decided to take the bus from our hostel instead of the cab ride and it was a nice experience - this is the bus that all the locals ride - after about a 2.5 hour bus ride on dirt roads we hopped on a ferry for 1.5 hours to the mainland - there was a woman on the ferry holding two live chickens by the feet - hahahaha- from there we shared a cab with a british couple to a town called rivas and they got out and we c...

san juan del sur part 2

yesterday we had breakfast at the market for $2 per person - its kind of like street vendors but they have tables and the food is really good - for $2 you get a fruit plate (a huge plate of cantelope watermelon banana and pinapple) plus whatever you ordered like an omlette and tortilla/toast etc are new hotel is $7 a person but we are staying in a huge room with three beds so they charged us for the extra bed kind of a $20 total a night - it is oceanfront with an awesome view of the beach and...

A death defying experience

... we still couldnt believe that we had conquered (??) Conceptione, especially since most of the locals we had spoken to afterwards were very surprised we had gone all the way to the top! Even our guide after the hike said that normally they only take people as far as 1,200meters.

But back to our kayaking experience, or rather, the lack of it.

As mentioned we were pretty excited to do the kayaking on the river. There was the chance of kayaking alongside crocodiles ...

... for my torch, I saw something crawl out of my pack and thought it was a lizard so I wasnt real concerned, after finding my torch and lighting it up I noticed that it was actually a damn big scorpian, natural reaction would be to tread on it but I was bare foot at the time and by the time a grabbed a shoe to kill it with it had run away, hopefully if it comes back I have shoes on.
Well I should go study Spanish now I guess, gotta love school while your on holidays.

Volcanos and Water

... There was a kitchen, outdoor showers, and free bananas and plantains! The farm prided itself on being organic and concentrated a lot on recycling and home made products, and composting toilets, which I thought were awesome! Transportation on the island is pretty non-existant. There is a lot of hitchhiking involved. Pretty much any time we went anywhere we had to hitch a ride in the back of someone's truck. The ...
