Minarets, mosques, mayhem & magic... Marrakech!

Landed to find ourselves once again in familiar surroundings of smells, sights & sounds that only the Middle East can deliver! Great to be back to where one's alarm clock is the sound of call to prayer and the crow of roosters at dawn. After putting our negotiating skills straight into practice on getting a taxi from the airport to a hotel we'd picked out, we accept that we have more than likely been ripped off for the first and doubtfully, last time. Meander through backstreets of the me...

Today the alarm clock rings early because we want to rent a car (or at least take a bus) and go south to the mountains and desert. It's Friday, which is said to be like Sunday in Europe and so the most of the medina would be closed anyway. Nearly all rental services are located along Mohammed V Avenue in Gueliz quarter, about 3km from medina. At first we want to try some cheap local ones, but not many people there speak English and rental conditions are unclear - at least, so we head to the i...

I began to consider Morocco as one of the next countries to visit about half a year ago when I heard of it from Ondra, my travelmate in China. I hadn't planned to visit it so early, but in November Ryanair airlines had an offer one can't decline;). For 44e including everything from Frankfurt to Marrakech and returning from Fes it was quite a bargain. Besides that, Morocco in January is neither so touristic/expensive nor so hot as in the summer. The whole expenses reached just 250e, most of it...

Back to the 'real' world

... for a week.
Next morning we do the walking tour of the city including the Bahia Palace & more of the souks, including the 'Berber Pharmacy' with its alleged natural cure-alls.
I then take myself off to the Jardin Majorelle which was owned by Yves San Laurent - see the photos.
Tonight was the final group dinner which involves a 'posh' rooftop restaurant but with dreadful service & the world's most overweight belly dancer - these are the things I would rather avoid!

Day 9: Hollywood in the desert

... inevitably there was no menu so we just got the base tagine, which was starting to get a little old. At the end of the meal was the also inevitable large bill not based on reality or quality ($35 for lunch in a small random town? Really?). We tossed down the minimum we could and moved on. The winding roads certainly weren't on the safe side, but having travelled on the death defying bus tours in the foothills of the Himalayas I could deal with this. The ...

... actually fits. Nope, no rulers or measuring tape here - he did it by hand...and just knew that it fit directly inside it. It was pretty neat. After leaving there, we made it into the mountains. They were gorgeous. We learned all about the Atlas mountains -- there are 3: High, Mid, and Low Atlas Mountains. We also learned about the inhabitants - the Berber people. So, we made it to the mountain. Once we arrived, we learned ...
