Historical Traveler Reviews Hotel Esperides Skiathos
Just returned from the Esperides Hotel. Breakfast and dinner was buffet service and food was first class with plenty of choice for vegetarians. There was both continental and cooked breakfast. One day a week the hotel provided a BBQ. Service was excellent as is the overall cleanliness of the hotel.
On the beach there was a regular water taxi to and from Skiathos town which proved to be very popular with the hotel guests. The bus stops are also very close to the hotel and run approx. every 15 minutes to Skiathos Town or alternatively to many beaches including Koukanaries where you can walk onwards to Banana beach.
The beach at Achladia bay (in front of the hotel) has a few tavernas including the Esperides taverna. However, if I have one criticism, there were not enough (free) sunbeds by the pool, consequently there was little choice but to pay 8 euros daily for 2 sunbeds plus umbrella on the beach.
The hotel did not provide any entertainment during our stay and there appeared little for children to do. However, I would thoroughly recommend it to adult tourists.
Best holiday ever
We have just returned from a 2 week holiday at the Espirides and it was absolutely wonderful. The hotel itself is spotlessly clean and very tasteful once you get inside the concrete exterior.
The dining hall is very well organised and you have the choice to sit inside or out, the choice of food is incredible, something for everyones taste and you can eat as much as you want. There are lots of courses also and I would recommend the soup, it is delicous.
Don't bother with the pool as the beach is wonderful and you get a lovely cool breeze which makes the 40 degrees temperature very manageable. It is well worth the 8 euros a day.
You must try the water taxi and take your camera as the views are stunning. It leaves the beach at the hotel every hour on the dot.
The maid service is excellent, every day we had clean linen and our maid Voulos always managed to clean our room whilst we were at breakfast so there was no inconvenience to us.
The rooms are very comfortable and there is a mini fridge which is on with 2 bottles of water for your arrival, there is no kettle, so take a travel kettle and teabags & coffee if you like a morning or evening drink.
Meals are served between 7.30 and 10 am and pm.
The staff will leave you alone if you wish but they are very friendly and helpful if you talk to them and their English is very good.
We will definetly be returning to this Hotel in the future. I would recommend this holiday for couples who like a beach holiday and lots of sun and good food.
For a Free running buffet with @ most times food include, this hotel is a must, very helpfull staff, beach is very clean and the town centre is very close, u can get there by either short cheap ferry, or a cab, about £2.00 max. Very enjoyable stay, well worth the time/visit. Have been there 3 times already, and may opt for a 4th time this sept 05.
Great Holiday, Lovely hotel, Amazing beeches
Stayed at The Esperides Hotel a bit late in the season in early September (the weather is good, but starting to be a little variable). The hotel was very spacious and comfortable. There is a lovely outside eating terrace with views of the sea. Food was good Greek cuisine with plenty to choose from. Plus they do a fantastic BBQ on Saturday nights. The Hotel is situated right on the beach, so most rooms have a full or side sea view. There was a water taxi from the jetty on the beach to take you into Skiathos Town which took about 15 mins. The last one being at 11.45. At night when you sat in the beachside bar you could hear the waves gently lapping the shore. There are not a lot of sun loungers by the pool - but who wants to sit by the pool in Skiathos when the beeches are so amazing!? There is also a bus service from just outside the hotel that runs to the various beaches on the island. The best beeches in our opinion are Banana, Little Banana and Maratha (which are all on the bus route) . This was our first visit to Skiathos but we hope to return again. We will probably stay at the Skiathos Palace next time though as it is nearer our prefered beeches (but much further from the town). So, if you want the best of both worlds, being near Skathos town, away from the airport but also near a very nice beech, then The Esperides is a good bet.
At first glance this lack lustre building displays all the hallmarks of a tourist hotel; that it has been built to accomodate the "hungry for sunshine Brits".
Accomodation is basic: rooms have no tea/coffee making facilities,no mini bar and frankly the decor is looking dated despite the rousing anthem of the hotel that it has been completely restored -- this was about 1995.
However, whilst first impresions count, staff at the hotel do much hard work to make this one of the finest hotels that we've stayed in (worldwide) for its cleanliness, friendliness and helpfulness of its staff.
Food is excellent and the attention to detail is sceond to none. There are wide choices to cater for all tastes and ages and we never heard a complaint from any other guest (certainly during our stay)
With a beach and the Aegean Sea five metres from the hotel, the pool area is largely redundant, but provides a welcome break for those seeking solace from the sea and sand. On the downside the shallow area is too deep for small children to stand in.
I didn't like the water taxi, but you must try it at least once. At one-Euro- fifty, (each way) its more expensive than the local bus and nowhere near as interesting a journey.
If you do visit the Espirides, be prepared to find a flavour and spirit of true Greece and its people.
Overall, this is a fine hotel and one of the best on the Island. You will not be dissapointed. Happy Holiday!!
Our thrd visit
This was our third visit to Skiathos and Esperides. We have always found the staff polite and friendly. Our cleaner - Katerina - kept the room spotless and in record time.
It is true the sunbeds around the pool are always taken by 6.30am, but with such a beautiful beach steps away we never found it a problem.
There was no entertainment in the evenings but the water taxi from the beach meant that Skiathos town was easy to get to. This meant that you could relax in the hotel if you wanted a quietnight.
We found the food enjoyable. For breakfast there was a choice of healthy and unhealthy options. For evening meals you could have upto four courses if yo could manage it. Beer was cheap but spirits more expensive.
We have done everything we can on the island now. We plan to go back in a few years time for a week rather than a fortnight.
We would recommend this hotel to anyone as the nicest we have stayed at in Greece.
We holidayed at the Esperides 4th to 11th August 2004. First impressions were very good, however I have to make some criticisms. The pool was deep at the "shallow end"(1.65m). Although the food at mealtimes was plentiful it was a bit bland and "samey". Some greek dishes would have made a change. NO evening entertainment at all. The only Greek entertainment was in the Taverna next door and it was very good. Our maid was next door to useless. I don't think she knew one end of a broom from other. I had to complain about changing the bed linen and towels. The floor certainly was not swept the time we were there. As for the previous reviewer complaining about the cost of sun beds on the beach, I agree they were expensive, 3 Euros per bed and 2 Euros for an umbrella. This has nothing to do with the Hotel. This was run by separate person who has to pay the local council for the area of beach he had the sun beds on. The hotel location was fine, easy to get to Skiathos town (bus 90 cents) and water taxi from the beach (1 euro 50cents each way). We will return. Possibly in 2005. Who knows. There's still plenty to see on the Island. Go by local bus, cheap but one hell of an experience. It was a very relaxing holiday nevertheless.
We felt that the 4 star rating was not worthy of the hotel. The staff on reception were extremely rude, the decor was very dated, the waiting staff were indifferent. The shallowest section of the pool was 1.65m, making it unsuitable for young children. In a hotel that can accommodate 380 guests we were amazed that only 23 sunbeds were offered by the pool. The holiday rep advised that guests set their alarm at 5am to reserve a chair, indeed at 6:50am on one day all the chairs were reserved. The hotel charges for the seats on the beach (8euros per day) The attitude of the staff was 'what sort of person wants to sit by the pool all day?' and 'people are too cheap to pay to sit on the beach!' As we were travelling with our 21 month old baby sitting on the beach all day was not an option. The location of the hotel is good however the Skiathos Princess hotel (also 4 star) is far superior in every way. The high chairs for infants were not wiped down between breakfast and dinner. If you like rude staff, 1960's decor, getting up at 5 am to save a sunbed by a very deep and small pool and a balcony that is more like a concrete prison yard this hotel is for you!!
We stayed at the espiredes from 9th-23rd June this year. It was the best and most relaxing holiday ever. The hotel is fantastic, the sort that if other people are getting off the transfer coach and you're not, you envy them staying at such a nice hotel!! The hotel and the gardens are kept in excellent condition.
Being right on the beach is ideal, its a lovely clean & quiet beach. Although most rooms have sea views, some are side views. We paid extra for a front sea view and it was well worth the extra money. The staff at the hotel are great, the maids are in the rooms every day and do a fantastic job, the reception staff and waiters speak excellent english. The waiters in the Pithari bar within the hotel are extremely friendly and the service is great. We will definately return to this hotel one day!
Relax, relax, relax at The Esperides Hotel Skiatos
Stayed at The Esperides Hotel from 11th - 25th June. The hotel was very spacious and comfortable, bed linen and towels changed daily. There was a lovely outside eating terrace with views of the sea.Food was good Greek cuisine with plenty to choose from. Hotel was situated right on the beach. There was a water taxi from jetty on the beach to take you into Skiathos Town which took about 15 mins. Last one was 11.45. At night when you sat in the beachside bar you could hear the waves gently lapping the shore. Very Shirley Valentine! Only downside was the pool was deep - even at the shallow-end and there was not a lot of sunloungers- but the beach being so close made up for this. This was our first visit to Skiathos but hope to return again. Will maybe try an appartment that has been recommended in the reviews! The island is so easy to get around - first time on holiday we didn't get lost! If you want total relaxation come to Skiathos!

We are all well and have hired a car again to see more of the island, there is a beach called Kokinacastra which is pretty special.
