Eehhh Burrinho (Fr+Pt)

'Tamos juntos.

The Longest Day of the Year

... I did not have definite preconceptions. I continue to be baffled by the juxtaposition and the priorities of the projects. We were stuck in traffic out of Dakar and the trip to Thies took over three hours. A great marabout (the khalif) had died and many were traveling to Touba to pay their respects. When we stopped for gas, the bus was surrounded by women and girls selling tangerines. They actually reached into the bus through the open windows. I was torn between pity for ...

... kayak exploration through the mangroves. The sunset was out of this world with four different views happening at once because at one end there was the sunset on the other the lightning storm in the distance and between them the skies were mixed hues, it kind of looked like the four seasons...and Vivaldi should have been playing while me and Jamie swam/floated in the salty waters of the mangroves while our two other mates personed the kayaks. The water was warm ...

Dreaming of a White Christmas

Recently, a friend of mine sent an e-mail and asked if I was beginning to get into the holiday spirit as Christmas is right around the corner. I'm sure he expected me to say that I wasn't feeling very Christmas-y, being in a predominantly Muslim country, but interestingly enough, Senegal has done an acceptable job of preparing me for the Christmas season. The neighborhood gas station has decorated their windows with fake snow ...

Time flies... and so do shoes!

... Mama and I spent almost the whole day together today, as well, as we went to her hometown to visit her family and attend the baptism of a family friend's newborn. I didn't get to see much of her family nor did I see a newborn, but I sure did meet a lot of women who made me feel like I was wearing rags. The boubous that the Senegalese women wear to baptism ceremonies are the most exquisite pieces of clothing I have ever seen in my life ...

... which means the ability to grow my own bananas and avacado! A little information about the language I'm learning: Pulaar is a very difficult language to grasp. Today for example, I learned the verb that means 'to say something about someone else when they are not present' (wa ade). There is also a verb for 'to pick something out of the garden with your hands'. I havent learned it yet but there is also a verb for thinking of something while you ...
