Dimitriou Karaoli 110 Alexandroúpolis, Thrace, Greece, 68100
Greek football, angry farmers and eco-tourism We made it into Greece, back into the EU, hurray! We almost didn't make it because we encountered a border protest of about 50 Greek farmers with tractors. Not exactly sure what they were protesting about, end of EU subsidies or cheap Turkish products.... In any case we made use of the delay to clean up the truck and then when we wanted to cross the border the customs official quickly looked at our passports and said: hurry up you have two minutes...
Alexandroupolis, Greece robertandtanja
Our second day at Vampire Camping was spent on a trip to nearby Brasov. This is a historic walled city, surrounded, as always, by traffic and ugly buildings. Within the walls though we found a comparatively peaceful, almost cosmopolitan, centre with a relaxed and easy atmosphere. What a pleasant change to sit in a town square with a cup of coffee watching attractive men and women walk by, no stray dogs, very little litter ...
Alexandroúpolis, Thrace, Greece oldagetraveller... boat - "Full Flight" - appeared next to us and, after the usual greetings etc Tony and Pat invited us over for a glass of wine or two. Slowly it dawned on us that we had met before, for about half and hour, on Sardinia -- small world innit? After emptying one another's drinks lockers and swapping loadsa books we parted company, them to the West and us to the East. Kavalla While in Thassos we took the ferry the 20 miles to the city of Kavalla on the mainland coast where we wanted to ...

Alexandroúpolis, Thrace, Greece leiks... the tzaziki- so fresh and simple with its few ingredients of yoghurt, garlic, cucumber and olive oil. Then the chilled roasted eggplant salad. Then the massive block of local feta atop a mound of tomatoes, onions and cucumbers. The crusty bread perfect for plate scraping. And the entrees. Rack of lamb, perfectly tender pork chops, a Greek sausagey meat loaf, skewers of fire roasted beef and ...
Alexanderpolis, Greece pilgrimsaunter... water, covered in sea shells, and we were the only people except for one person on a motorcycle. We splashed around for a while before walking home for dinner and nursing our sun burns and mosquito bites. Last night Georgia took me on her moped to Alexanderpoli to run errands and meet with some friends. During evening in the summer time they close the main road along the beach for foot traffic. It was a pleasant warm evening ...

Alexandroúpolis, Greece npointing... water and toilet paper, just ended up making a bigger mess. I will spare all of you the details of the next hour I spent trying to get a taxi, bus and then tram to the hostel where Bree and Katy were waiting. I managed to get on the bus and then off at the right stop but prior to getting off the bus the kind lady next to me warned me that I should not be alone so late at night (midnight by now) and the area I was being dropped at was similar to the Bronx ...
Istanbul, Turkey blissmiss... this conflict. Examples: Turkish soldier picking up a wounded ANZAC and carrying him to the ANZAC trench, a Digger giving his water canteen to an injured Turkish soldier, a game of cricket on the battlefield, officers from either side having a cup of tea and a yarn, Turks and ANZACs exchanging tobacco for tobacco paper and vs (each side had only one of these, not the other, so the mutually exchange!!!), two ...
Galliploi, Turkey christian-ro... the Australian Memorial is and Cunnock Bairn (sic) where the NZ memorial is. The landscape is amazing - Valleys leading into valleys into valleys, Cliffs, bluffs, tiny traverses, whatever you want to get you confused, it's there. The allied troops picked pretty much the worst place to land. It must have been hell! and to think my grandfather had been there 90 years ago ýs pretty soberýng. Genghis gave a short background on the area and what happened there ...
