Off to see the Vikos Gorge

We set off fairly early as its a 2 hour drive through the mountains to see the famous gorge and surrounding national park.

we visited the visitor centre first and had some friendly and very helpful advise from the young lady who spoke excellent English.

We we then set about visiting several of the old towns on the mountain and then the gorgeous gorge itself!

A fantastic day, if a little long, but definitely worthwhile.

The gigantic rocks of Meteora are perched above the town of Kalambaka, at a maximum height of 400 m (1200 ft). The most interesting summits are decorated ...

The last monastery we saw was Varlaam, one of the bigger ones. It had a rope lift which they used to use to lift people up and supplies (now there are stairs, luckily cause I don't think Glen would have coped). On the way out we brought a goat bell because they were really cool (check out the video of me giving it a ring, a true blue kiwi there haha). We didn't manage to get to all the Monasteries, Great Meteoron (the biggest monastery) was too packed and we could not get ...

... by hitting the talanton which is a block of wood that monks hit with a hammer to alert monks for service. We couldn't take pictures inside but the church is decorated with different scenes of Jesus Christ and the many scenes that are depicted in the New Testament. The dome is decorated with the gospel writers Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Then we we made our way to the next monastery, Agia Triada, meaning Holy Spirit. But before we got there ...

... came mainly from Bulgaria, Greece and Romania but they were just too many of them (some of the groups consisted of 80 persons). They made the monastery even smaller (especially when 2 or 3 groups met in the same spot where 50 people can feel comfortable but definitely not 200) and a little bit too crowded so after 40 minutes of suffering we decided to leave or better say to run away from the crowd!

Then we went to Roussanou Monastery but this one was really crowded as well ...
