... live in Newcastle, NSW. The rest were pretty much Americans. A nice ride through orange and lemon trees to the site which was set among old trees and wild flowers everywhere. Very pretty and so much history it was very busy with school groups and our cruise tours - would not like to be there in the height of summer with thousands of tourists. We went from Kalambaka to Meteora to visit a couple monasteries located on top of the huge rock formations. We first visited the Varlaam Monastery and only six monks live here. There is a talanton that they use to call the monks to meals and it is made out of wood or metal. We got to see one outside of the main church. ... am still stunned they even chose to build on the tops of the outcrops in the 14 -16th centuary. There are 6 left out of the original 16, erosion is their greatest challenge as its sandstone. Well done to unesco for protecting this as world heritage. Driving through the plains on the way home, photos can't capture the size and vastness.
