Seri Nyonya Peranakan Restaurant Melaka
The Seri Nyonya Restaurant has actually not been given it's share of credit when people talk about nyonya restaurants in Melaka, despite having won the title of "Best Award Winning Restaurant" from the Tourism Office. This might be due to the fact that the other restaurants have existed way before Seri Nyonya and has been established as part of the Melaka scenery. Another fact is that it is not a restaurant that stands on it's own but is situated...
Cheery wave goodbye, in the rain, from Bob & Vita,as we get into a taxi headed for the city in order to catch a coach to Melaka. The five hour journey passes without event, other than plantation after plantation after plantation, and good conversations with two gay civil servants, one French, one English Initial observations on the differences between the two countires are that we are now very clearly in a Muslim state, not in any way in a threatening sense, but though dress, and vehicle ...

Melaka day 2
A full day exploring Melaka by foot. Dodging once more, the ubiquitous tri-shaw wallahs, we set off past the Porta de Santiago and remains of the great Portuguese Fort of A Formosa, together with the Proclamation of Independence Memorial, which is actually a building. Onwards then towards the town square and our planned walking trail.
This would not be a concern as the suggested Jerak Warisan Heritage Trail could be obtained from the Tourist Information Off...
Wow! Words can't describe the eperiences we have had since arriving to our new destination; Melaka, Malaysia. It's still as hot as singapore, if not, HOTTER :D. But I think we're adjusting well :) We spend many hours in the local shopping centers with air-conditioning. Let's start from where I left off... From Singapore we packed up our backpacks and caught a local transit bus to a central "bus station". Considering how heavy our bags were, and factor in the incredible humidity, we were defen...
Melaka, Malaysia jessicaWe took the bus from Singapore to Malaka (both tickets cost less than ONE$ingaport $ling at the Raffles Hotel). The ride took longer than expected (over 5 hours with border crossings, stops for lunch, etc.). But we arrived, checked in at the Hotel Equatorial, and had time to walk over to the central historical area, see the Istana, wander over to the Staad Haus (the rest of the stuff was closed by then) and climb up St. Paul's hill to see the runis of the church there and the statue of St. Fr...
Malaka, Malaysia oberstOn Friday awaited for A(my malay medic friend from the Isle of Wight) to arrive, and then be able to know the plans for her sister's wedding. Relaxed, met more people passing through the hostel, bartered and played with my camera. Finally, found out that she had actually missed the actual marriage vows of her sister's wedding! (and so had I - but obviously much less significant.) The events for friday evening involved reading of the quran by the women. So that night, met more people in the ho...

... despite the large number of visitors). We did find a great Indian restaurant open though, which server amazing chicken and nan bread cooked in the tan-door. So delicious, we return a further two nights. Walking the short distance to this place through a residential area, we found a mechanics yard converted for evening use into a venue for yet more karaoke - the stage was the back of a truck ...

Malacca, Malaysia avieira1965... much in our two months here - it just isn't necessary - like I said, damn near everyone here speaks English. That's not to say we haven't learned anything -- quite to the contrary, in fact. But we just haven't learned as much as we could have. So now that you know a little bit about Bahasa, can you translate this: bas ekspres? If you guessed that's bus express, you're right. And that's just what we were looking for on the morning of Friday the thirteenth: a bus to whisk ...
Melaka, Malaysia koppers... merchants (where we indulged in some of the best spring roles ever!!!), past buddhist, taoist and hindu temples, mosques and even a methodist church. It was amazing to see all of these structures of different faiths and belief systems in such close proximity with one another, having been established at different points in Melakan history over the past 500 years or so. It also seemed to me, a tourist on a day trip, that there was acceptance of each other and ...
