          Hallstatt, Austria's hidden gem

... was quite the logistic nightmare. Our host in the Dolomites had to call a tourist office for us to be sure we could get to where we needed to go. I spent about 3 hours online tracking our trains and buses to a T in two different languages so that we could get there in a reasonable manner. Our journey began at 6am with our extremely generous hosts driving us over an hour in the dark through the curvy mountain roads to a more touristy town with a regional bus station (Blake got car ...

... is built at the bottom and up the side of a mountain on the edge of Lake Hallstatt. We loved this quaint little village and found it hard to believe how long people have been living there. It was first settled as a town for mining salt in 800-450 B.C. Here is a quote from the website www.tourismontheedge.com
"Considered to be one of the oldest still inhabited settlements in Europe,
Hallstatt is a UNESCO heritage site ...

Day 25 - Bruck to St Johann

... told the price for staying. I was feart to ask a third time! Installed before lunchtime, a first for us, we had time to wander round the village and then find a hotel with a sheltered patio in the sunshine to partake of a little nourishment. The little turned out to be rather a lot, but a bottle of best wine (well Austrian best) helped to wash it down. Back at the ranch, it was a case of shorts ...

... in a complex with many others, dropped off our bags and went to tour Hallstatt. We both thought that it reminded us a bit of Leavenworth but with a very large lake bordering the village. Very touristy with what seemed like hundreds of Asian tourists. Most seemed very young and of course snapping pictures of everything. There was one woman taking pictures of the shelves at the grocery Store, What's up with that?

... a bunch of extra places for like a nano-second. We knew we would have to cross a lake by ferry to get to our little town, so we were looking for a lake at about the time we were supposed to be here. That was helpful. With all the extra little stops, it wasn't on time though. Only a little late. The trip took about 4 hrs.
A little excitement for us tonight. I had just started typing this and all the power went out. Pitch black in ...
