We departed Rome on time at 7.50am and had a pleasant rail trip to Venice Mestre station where we changed to a coach for the trip to Villach. Train got up to 250kph in places and there were lots of tunnels. The Coach was very comfortable and the scenery very interesting as we left the plain behind and headed into the mountains. It took about 3 hours to reach Villach and we did not have to wait long to get picked up by Betttina, our home exchange contact. She drove us ...

Just southwest of Salzburg in Austria's scenic Salzkammergut lake district was a waypoint in our journey toward Vienna, a place I had only recently heard of but knew we wouldn’t want to miss: Hallstatt. Went to the museum that had an excellent display of various aspects of the mining and ...

... where got on the cable car for the Mountain station at 2,060 meters.

On the way up the cable car we ran into a couple girls from Chicago who seemed a little clueless on where to go. They wanted to go to the ice caves, but had not even checked in to get a time for the caves. And now they were on the wrong cable car heading to 5 Fingers. They had apparently bought a ticket for 5 Fingers (since they couldn't have got on the cable car without the ticket), but didn't seem to ...
