... reach the island of Murano. This island is famous for its glass and there are glass works everywhere. We wander the streets and canals admiring all the beautiful glass objects. They range from jewellery to statues; lampshades to glasses. Almost anything you can think of and they make it in glass. Some of the plates and bowls are amazing. And everything is done in their own particular style, since each glass factory has their own artists designing and producing. We ...

Today was a day for getting my bearings and getting my vaporetta and tourist passes. Wandered down through the old ghetto and found what must be the safest location for a coffee and a meal, the synagogue and kosher restaurant, which had its own military guard station. We were having a look around the gallery for about 3-4 hours.

It was about 1 pm at this time and ...

... have been there a long time if it were up to the dock to get me there.

Quite the sweaty struggle to get my (now pretty heavy) luggage on and off the train & boat and over canals and up the stairs. But I found the place easily. Antonio, the owner, is an older gentleman, a retired anthropology professor. The regular host is out of town so he graciously showed me the neighborhood, including an ...

... Italian food! The highlight today though was the gondola ride! Lopsided throughout (Matt almost capsized us!), it was amazingly quiet and peaceful! The canal's are obviously the back streets of the town, deserted save for the progression of tourists alike all soaking up this Venetian experience. I found it glorious, but yet quite sad... Particularly as our guide was telling us about the flooding and pointing out various buildings whereby the ...
