Another day passes without seeing a car! This morning we lined up to view the Basilica in P. San Marco. The first church was built in the 9th century, but was burnt down and rebuilt from 11C. In 13C the domed ceiling mosaics were started. Again no photos were allowed of this extraordinary art. The Doge's Palace next door was started in 12C and has been a museum for about 90 years. Lots of history and lots of spectacular chambers, including the Senate chamber that could enclose ...

... the Palazzo Ducale this afternoon. It was the old Doges' (duke's) palace and centre of government for Venice. It is full of extravagantly decorated rooms but the most interesting part was the prison. I walked through the "Bridge of Sighs" named for the sighs of prisoners being led to trial. It has been overcast and cool today but we can hardly complain about the weather, this is only the second non sunny day we have ...

Last night was restless. I shouldn't read halloween scary things prior to bed in a new location in a small Italian town. It comforted me a bit that the doors locked and I grabbed a frying pan to have next to my side. Paola drove us to the train station at 10. The train was packed so we stood the 30min ride to Venice. We organized tomorrow's reservations then explored the city. Venice is just as awesome as I remember. I love getting wonderfully lost ...

... theatre, brunch with other "mariners", an exercise class, a below-deck ship tour, a cocktail party; plus I did 10 laps of the deck each day. And that's just the stuff I remember! Today I was very lazy by comparison. Or to put a positive spin on it, I was a better companion for Nanna. Apart from doing my laps around the deck (hey Cath, wouldn't that look interesting on Strava?), I typed up my travel blog, snoozed, read a little, snoozed, browsed the library, ...

... restaurant we ate at last year. The rain had started to fall on our way to dinner so we opted for a table inside. We had a lovely meal, probably the best so far in Venice. Started with antipasti and a cabrese salad, then Hamish had spaghetti carbonara and James had pizza. Both Geoff and I had a scallopini and grilled vegetables. It was all very good. We opted for a gelati on the way home rather than dessert at the restaurant as they were a bit disappointing. ...
