Lovin Ljubljana

Really quick note and then more later... We love Ljubljana!! We arrived last night by train from Venice. Had dinner at a place called Zlata Ribica by the river. Delicious meal and then we had coffee at an outdoor cafe by the river. The city center looks like a movie set or a Disney creation it is so perfect! Our hotel is a little eastern European but I think we will survive! Nasvidenje for now! More later... Stephne & Kevin

Ljubljana means "beloved"

Okay...let's start with a couple of housekeeping items: we have a couple of photos from Venice that we need to get out of the way...we took a gondola ride and Kevin stayed dry and out of the canal (though to be honest, there was a close call as he climbed into the boat!). We are really in love with Ljubljana. We spent so much time preparing and reading about this place that there was the risk of disappointment but that hasn't happened. Our hotel has a few flaws but we're past that and not wor...

Market day in Ljubljana

Everyday is market day in Ljubljana but they bust it out on Saturday! Every stall in the Central Market was filled and the place was packed. They even had entertainment! We wandered through the stalls, bought a basket, a loaf of freshly baked bread and some locally made cheese and butter and then ate like pigs. After wandering around the market a bit, we took the little train up to the castle overlooking the city. The weather is beautiful today but it is just a bit hazy for those dreamy panor...

Sleepy, sunny Ljubljana

We've said so many times that this is such a beautiful place... Our evening walk last night confirmed that...again. We had a nice walk on the fashionable streets on the east side of the river before a traditional Slovene dinner. It was a bit chilly but that makes the walk even nicer! We finished the evening with a hot cocoa and a traditional Slovenian favororite, borovnice (a hot blueberry brandy)! Sunday in Ljubljana is the antidote to Saturday in Ljubljana. Today was, we are told, a typical...

The Julian Alps: Bled and Bohinj

What an amazing day we had today. We rented a car after breakfast this morning and headed northwest into the Julian Alps. About 20 minutes out of town we caught our first glimpse of the alps...grey, jagged peaks stretching into the sky against a foreground of changing fall colors. And there we are, driving along at 120 km/hr on a motorway marked with signs that we cannot read. Hey, we're on holiday...what's the worse that can happen?! In fact, we got exactly where we were going without gettin...

The Karst, the Caves and the Coast

It is hard to believe that it has been nearly three days since I've updated our travel log but it has been a busy three days... We just returned from our day in Maribor, it's raining and we've had a lovely light supper at a little gourmet place in the alley next door. As for the last three days, here's where we've been: We started out on Tuesday morning a bit later than we had initially intended but who cares, we're on holiday! We were heading west to the Postonja Jame - the Postonja Caves. P...

Maribor, more alps, WWI and the Soca river!

Can't believe how fast the time is going now that we've been here a bit over a week. But we're doing what we can to savor and make the most of every moment. We drove up to Maribor in the north east of Slovenia on Thursday. The town is just over a hundred thousand people and the second largest city in the country. It is near the borders of Hungary and Austria and it has a decidedly different feel from Ljubljana and the west. We went to Maribor to meet Michael Manske. Michael is a New Yorker wh...

Chilly Ljubljana, still quite the place!

We've had a couple more lovely but chilly days in Ljubljana. There was a very slight breeze on Sunday and the temperature bobbed above and below 40 degrees most of the day. With the breeze and the river running through town providing a little moisture, it felt really nippy in spite of the bright sunshine. We wandered through the market and the old town in the morning and then had a little lunch at Vodnikov Hram, the place we'd eaten lunch on Saturday. It is really good Slovene fare and the pl...

Ljubljana

We arrived in Ljubljana, Slovenia with the best connection from the train station so far. Found our hotel in record time. Weather was really nice, but soon turned to a raging thunder storm and a torrent of rain. We strolled a bit, but got caught in the rain so came back to our hotel. This morning it was raining again, but we decided with such a short time here we wanted to see the sights anyway, We hooked up with a town tour that said they go out even in the rain. Brother did they ever go out...

Cheap and clean

from A TripAdvisor Member
Located right in the middle of Ljubljana, very easy to reach the main train station and bus station. All very basic, but what you would expect from a 2* hotel. Breakfast was a bonus as we weren't expecting it. Only bad points were that we were in room 101, which is straight off of reception. This meant we could hear everyone coming in and out of the main entrance and could also hear the phone ringing in reception. If you are given this room I would recommend asking to change. The double bed was essentially two single mattresses on a double frame so the join in the middle was a little uncomfortable. Apart from that, excellent service, the receptionist helped us hire a car to go skiing, and a great hotel if you just need somewhere to sleep.

Location, Location, Location!!

from JessicaRabbit
Absolutely thrilled with our stay at The Emonec. I stayed here for 5 nights in January 2006, on a relaxing City Break with my Husband. We booked Our Room directly with the hotel via the website, which was very easy and straightforward. Due to the bargain price and a couple of reviews that I'd read here on TripAdvisor, I wasn't expecting much, but was very pleasantly surprised by the place when we arrived. The Hotel staff were all freindly, welcoming and chatty, the ensuite double room we stayed in was very spacious and clean, extra blankets and pillows were supplied without the need to ask, as were large towels!

The Beds were firm, but that's how I like them - so no problem with comfort.

The climate was extremely cold during our stay, but the room had its own thermostat, enabling us to decide on the required level of heating, and we never felt chilly.

Breakfast was a real bonus, included in the bargain room rate.

If I had one critcism of the Emonec, it would be that I would liked to have had the facility to purchase hot drinks in the afternoon, but Tea, Coffee and Hot Chocolate were only available at breakfast....... it's a silly whinge really, this is a 2 star hotel after all!!

There are several excellent places to eat and drink very nearby - the delicious & tempting Pattiserie/Cafe on the corner, The Cutty Sark Pub, and Cafe Romeo became my favorite refuges from the cold.......the Slovenians serve delicious Mulled Wine or Hot chocolate!

We had a lovely meal at a cheesy Slovenian Theme Restaurant near the town Hall called something like "Nudimo Vam". They brew their own beer and are very popular with local familes - all the waiting staff are dressed up in traditional Folk costume.

The Hotel Emonec is an absolute Gem, very close to the Three Bridges & within walking distance of everything you could possibly wish to visit in Ljubljana.

Very Economic the Emonec

from mtbhll
A great central location and a pretty good price! The rooms are very clean and nicely but plainly furnished and decorated. Booking by email could not have been more simple and efficient.

There do not appear to be too many budget hotels around the capital so for this to be so good is a real bonus.

Ljubljana is a great place and this hotel is an ideal base for both the capital and day trips to Bled for example.

There was some noise from the local disco - booming bass - but not enough to cause too much discomfort. And yes the towels are only hand towels but if you ask you will get some larger bath towels.

No better location

from A TripAdvisor Member
Tucked off of Wolfova Ulica, I have never stayed at a better value hotel than the Emonec. Our room was spotless, the bathroom the cleanest I have seen in years, and the front desk quite helpful. One night I heard a bit of noise from Presernov Trg, but nothing that kept either my wife or I awake. Met the bare necessities better than some hotels where we've paid more. And no hotel in the city can beat the location. Will stay here every time we go to Ljubljana, which after the terrific weekend we had, hopefully will be soon.

Tucked away in the centre of the city

from Query
Situated in a courtyard only two minutes walk from the Triple Bridge it has a very central location in the old part of the city. Booked a triple room which had plenty of space for three and a separate shower/WC. Everything very clean in the hotel and comfortable. Self-service breakfast was adequate but avoid the watery fruit juice. Depite being so close to the centre there was no noise at night. The room worked out at £56 per night which is very good for three people in this city where it can be very difficult to find reasonably priced rooms. Had a good meal at Gostilina Sokol, in Metodov, just a few minutes from the hotel. Traditional Slovenian cuisine and very pleasant staff. Similar experience at Julija in Stari, again vey close to the hotel. Difficult to spend more than £8 per head on a meal - very good value.

Excellent value and a great find!

from wideeyedtraveller
Having just returned from a trip to Ljubljana with a group of friends I'm happy to say we were all very pleased with this hotel! It's great value for money, ideally located, very clean and the reception staff were very helpful and friendly. All the tourist sights are right on your doorstep, Presernov Trg, the Triple Bridge, open air market are literally a minute's walk away. The train/bus station is about 10 mins walk away at most.

The only drawback is that Club Bacchus is close to the Hotel up the next street so expect noise and loud bass from around 11pm-4am or so Mon-Sat! Our philosophy was if you can't beat them join them! We also had an issue with the tiny towels but when we spoke to reception they supplied us with more towels and larger towels. The bathroom is more of a shower wet room with a toilet and basin a step up from the floor in the bedroom and with frosted glass doors. We did worry about privacy as there were 3 of us sharing a room but it was fine. The beds were clean, comfortable and made up daily. The rooms were a little chilly, but we were supplied with extra duvets and blankets. The room is basic and minimally decorated: wardrobe, TV and no coffee or tea. Breakfast can be a bit hectic but there is a good enough range on offer. There is also a little shop in the hotel courtyard where you can buy cheap snacks and bits and bobs.

We spent weeks looking for a suitable hotel - most in Ljubljana are located some distance from the centre or too expensive. It is not easy to find a hotel in Ljubljana so make sure you book well in advance! It is low season at the moment and the Hotel Emonec was booked out. We chose this hotel after reading a review on TripAdvisor and we were not disappointed.

All in all, if you like your hotels luxurious then this is definitely not for you! It is a budget hotel which represents excellent value for money for what you get and is a place to crash. Five of us stayed there and none of us have any complaints! Highly recommended!

Disapointing-After expecting More

from valjalom
We stayed at this Hotel on the 15th of September 2005 for one Night. It is ideally situated right in the heart of the city. The Hotel is very basic, but the Staff were very nice, polite and professional. We had a double room, which was so small you could not stand up properly or move around the room, the bathroom was very close to the bed which made it very inpersonal. There was also a damp smell, the room also had no Windows and only a Sky Light Window. We were very angry about this because all other rooms on the same 2nd Floor were spacious and had windows. My partner said that they gave us this room because we were British and we traditionally do not complain. If you are also staying at this Hotel, refuse room 204 and also ask to see your room firsrt, for the same price the rooms differ considerably. In conclusion, this is a cheap Hotel, very basic, reasonably clean, no frills and ideally situated. However if you are used to Radison/Hilton standards forget it, you will be disapointed. It is Cheap it cost us 59Euros for a double room, hoever the sign outside said 27 Euros and it is probably value for money. This is good hotel for the centre of Ljubljana and also a good place just to "crash". Be warned if you have car, please tell the staff to reserve you a parking space-otherwise you will have to pay for car park 100 yards away. There are only 10 car parking spaces in a very congested courtyard.

Fine for a budget hotel

from Mr_Pea
The hotel is right, slap bang in the middle of Ljubljana, it would be hard to find anywhere more central (apart from the more pricey Grand Hotel Union).

The rooms are comfortable enough (although no air conditioning- we stayed when it was really hot) and the bathrooms are fine, but they only supplied us with hand towels.

The breakfast experience is acceptable if not entirely pleasant. If the hotel is busy there is a general scramble in the breakfast room over the toaster and coffee machine, and it is also quite noisy from the clattering of plates going into a dishwasher.

In all our stay was fine, and what I was expecting from a budget hotel.

Certainly a hidden gem!

from A TripAdvisor Member
This hotel has 2 stars and deserves them both. I was dropped here with a taxi arranged by the hotel from the airport (25 EUR).

I paid for my room in advance (although they were happy for me to also do this on check out) it was 49 EUR for a single. The room was a very good size.

Its decoration was very simple - plain white walls, but the bathroom was very nicely tiled and everything was clean.

What I didn't realise that if you exit the hotel, enter the main street then turn right - you are right in the centre of Ljubljana which was a wonderful city, full of charm and character.

I was very lucky to find this hotel by chance, everything else was very expensive and this hotel had been recently renovated and represented good value for money.

There was a tv and telephone in the hotel rooms, and the breakfast was a bit hectic for so many guests, but food was frequently replaced and it was acceptable for the money paid.

Great location

from Linkys
This is a secreat gem in a city which lacks value for money hotels. You either have to pay way too much for an underwhelming hotel, or just as much for a hotel with bad reviews. This one was recommended to us. It is very central and walking distance to all the main sights. It is in the old town. We stayed in a double room with ensuite and chose to pay a bit extra for a room with a bit more spce. It was worth it. The hotel was very clean and quiet and comfortable. The receptionist was a bit surly but we got over that. The breakfast is basic but adequate. Highly recommended.
