... their scooters or motorcycles up with the pedestrians. To make matters worse in some areas there really was no sidewalk because apparently when they can't find parking on the street the drivers just find a place on the sidewalk. Nobody seems to do anything about this and, in fact I saw very few police the entire time we were in Athens. But don't let the traffic dissuade you from visiting. Just be a very watchful pedestrian.

The Symposium

So you're on a long, narrow cushioned ledge. You're stretched out on the ledge on your left side, propped up by your left elbow. With your right hand, you grab the food coming round on platters, and drink your wine. You spend hours conversing with your friends, who are similarly reclined around the room. Sometimes the dialogue gets deep and heated, and sometimes it just gets drunken and debauched. You are at an ancient Greek sumposion, or as ...

... the saleswoman makes her pitch. Later I'll tune in to Channel 14's exciting evening lineup of antique Who's the Boss and The Nanny reruns subtitled in Greek. Last night as I lay hacking, I watched The Englishman Who Went Up a Hill But Came Down a Mountain. The plot of the film hinges on a Welsh hill that is twenty feet too low to qualify for mountain status on an English map, so the villagers decide to add twenty feet of soil to the top. But in the Greek subtitles, all ...

maybe not so quietly). I've never met anyone with such steely
determination to track down solutions and info. When faced with similar
situations on my travels, I picture her face as she emerges triumphant
from the basement, victory in hand.

This Is the Way We Go to School

... gone very well so far. It will be a challenge because instead of upper-division communication majors who are required to have a background in foundational communication concepts before taking my classes, I have students from all sorts of majors with no foundation in communication at all. Plus we have a library of books about Greece, but not necessarily about communication concepts or modern Greek issues, so I've had to design assignments that are much lighter on research and ...

Athens at least we are with the Cabanas kids!

... for the suggestion) where both couples had their own room but we did have to share a shower and bathroom with others on the floor. Alex and Heather had a great porch with a neat view of the Acropolis too! Then, we headed to the touristy dining area where we feasted on COLD beer, Greek salads, GOOD french fries and beef and chicken kabob plates. YUM! Don't worry, we stopped for ice cream on the way home...there just haaaapppeeennned to be a place about 4 ...

Athens (Day 1)

... huge and easy to get lost in, but great for finding souvenirs and a lot of great stuff. It is also built around the ancient ruins of market and a library, which was cool to see in between stores. Compared to the Egyptian ruins that were so well preserved due to lack of rain, the Greek ruins were not as impressive as we had pictured, but it was still amazing to be there and see where one of the greatest times in ancient history ...

... all had a cocktail and for the first time were totally relaxed. We had no tours, no dates, no work meetings and it felt great. Bob and Karen shared lobster and spaghetti and I had an amazing shrimp and fois gras salad. YUM YUM. We then took a much needed nap and met later for dinner. The first night we ate at Ambrosia. It is walking distance on a really cute street that's filled with shops, markets and restaurants. I had an amazing ...

Greece - The Cradle of Democracy

... completely mobbed by tourists, and for good reason - it was easily a rival to the Colosseum in Rome. There unfortunately are massive restoration projects going on everywhere on the Acropolis. It was a bit disappointing, however all that scaffolding has apparently been a fixture up there for many years, and we were glad to see that the Greek government is working hard to preserve those wonders for future generations to enjoy. Thankfully all the work ...

Athens - City of Athena

... street vendors peddling their imitation goods with one eye searching for potential customers and the other looking out for the cops. It didn't look like a pretty city from the ground, and a faint smell of smog permeated amidst the urban overload of buildings. Like the majority of tourists to Greece, we first made our way to the Acropolis, famous the world over for its Parthenon, the ancient Doric temple which has wowed people with its symmetry and history. It is by far the number ...
