... 1255. We also stumbled across the Musée Amphoralis of Roman pottery near Narbonne, the only known industrial scale Roman ceramic factory, with its own aqueduct and 14 big kilns. The biggest kilns were capable of firing up to 1,000 amphorae at once. The Romans used amphorae for storing and transporting wine, olive oil, grains and could be as small as a carafe and as large as a "California hot tub". Roof tiles were also manufactured here.
