... and just 6 miles or so from Italy, we stopped at a great stone fort that was used by the Italians in the 15th century to fight the Ottoman invasion, and then ironically by the Austrians to repel the Italians in the 1st World War. Sheer drop on one side, sheer cliff on the other with ladder rungs affixed to the cliff face (see photo) that allowed soldiers to quickly get to the mountain top, a very dramatic site, full of history. ... was perfectly cooked! Upon leaving, Martin insisted on a photo, of all of us, not just him and the ladies. He also presented us with a bag of freshly made sausages, a jar of homemade jam, a pyrex dish containing pancakes for desert/breakfast, and some pens and balloons for the kids!!
