... Sforzesco for a brief walk around - it is huge and beautifully built with rounded brick turrets and huge courtyards. We decided not to catch the metro but walk through the city, it is more interesting that way. We then visited the Duomo for an inside look. We took the audio tour, visited the crypt and found a cardinal Alfredo Ildefonso Schuster who was honoured for his contributions. He might be related! We were ready, but the Swiss weren't! The most memorable part of the journey was not the beautiful scenery, the picture postcard lakeside villages, the mountains, or the waterfalls. Instead, it was the 2 hour queue waiting to get through the 17km Gotthard-Strassentunnel on the A2. That meant our planned stop in Lucerne was abandoned, and we got to Strasbourg at about 9pm. Well obviously, if you're going to drive in Italy on the first weekend in August, you need to be going north. That was lucky!

Having finished packing up the car with what seemed to be three times as much as we brought with us - how come it fit getting here, and doesn't on our way back? - we added a trip to a supermarket to fill up with cheap booze and Baci chocolates - ah that explains it!

Italy is the 3rd highest contributor to the EU (higher than the UK) and yet receives the least investment from the Union. The economy is struggling to the point where the traffic in Milan is no longer chaotic and the streets are empty - even those with succesful businesses are pessimistic about the future and struggling to make ends meet.

... escalator was out of service we had to walk up a ramp that was long enough on which to land a small commercial airliner. The platform had no indication of where individual carriages would line up so we had no choice but to wait where we were.
